The golden sunbeams of the dusk painted the redwoods yellow. Owls hooted and screeched on the top of the trees and the omnipresent sound of woodpeckers could be heard from miles away. Between the space of a tree and another, it was possible to see a water tank far away in the distance. No words in the entire world were more welcoming than what was painted with grey paint on that wooden surface: Gravity Falls.
Mabel Pines pressed her face against the window as if the water tower was going to be way closer that way. Despite the burning heat, the girl wore a bright red sweater with the image of the iconic shooting star.
Sharing the bus seat with her and her brother, Waddles chewed the girl's thick and brown hair with a blank expression on its face. Surprisingly, the pig hadn't grown much since the previous year. It still looked like a pink marshmallow with two pairs of legs.
"Feels weird to be back", Dipper said with a little smile on his face "It's almost like we never left".
Mabel looked away from the window to get a look of her brother. It was amazing how one year could make such a big difference in one's appearance. The boy was way taller than he was last year and his nose wasn't as round and little as it used to be, twelve months back. Instead, it was slightly pointier and way more curved. His chin was starting to look a bit squarer, making the boy look a little more like his great uncles. Dipper was wearing his usual blue coat and a red shirt. Wendy's lumberjack hat was still on his head.
"What are you talking about? It feels forever since we left!", the girl said, pulling her hair beyond Waddles' grasp "So much must have changed! Sans must be way thinner, now! Maybe Shmebulock had a grandson! I bet Wendy got married!".
"What?", Dipper said, not comfortable about that topic "She's only seventeen! She's not old enough to get married".
Mabel shrugged.
"You never know", she said "Maybe she married to the gnomes, like I almost did. Remember that?".
"How couldn't I?", dipper replied.
It was indeed hard to forget the gnomes. Those seemingly inoffensive tiny men who wanted to marry Mabel turned out to be quite deadly. Luckily, the girl discovered that they could be easily defeated with leaf blowers.
"It's a shame we know all about that stuff", Dipper said, nostalgic "I wish I could forget all of the town's mysteries so I could discover them again".
"What a horrible thing to say", Mabel reprimanded "Why would you want to forget such good memories? Don't you remember what happens to who forgets too much?".
"Sorry", Dipper said "It's just... This town doesn't feel just as mysterious and challenging as it was before. The monster in the lake was just one of McGucket's inventions, the pterodactyl is trapped in the amber mines and even the ghosts in the abandoned grocery store are my friends".
"I don't remember this last one", the girl said, confused.
"You was sick from all those candy you ate and lost the whole thing", the boy explained.
"Hey! Those weren't just candy. Those were Flavor Pups", Mabel said "But you're missing the point here: Gravity Falls isn't some theme park where you can walk a couple meters and find something thrilling. It's where our family and friends are. Grunkle Stan and great-uncle Ford are going to be there!".
Dipper sighed.
"I suppose you're right. I do miss them a lot".
A sudden bump announced that the bus had stopped. The vehicle's breaks hissed as the doors opened for the only two passengers. Mabel grabbed Waddles under her left arm and ran outside carrying her briefcase on her other arm. Dipper carried the rest of the baggage with both his arms as he walked outside of the bus.
