coming to college, I felt so unprepared. other people were unpacking yet I felt so, not ready? i mean, it's not like I was behind in lessons or anything like that, I just didn't feel like I fit in here. everybody looked so professional yet I was in leggings and a hoodie topped off with a pair of white converses.
"that should be the last of the boxes," my brother, jack said. he had helped me move the boxes from my car to outside my room after begging him for hours the night before. "you do have a key don't you?"
"somewhere in my pockets." i shrugged. he looked down at me as he towered over me, perks of only being 5"1. he pushed his dark brown hair out of his eyes and sighed.
"guess this is it, kiddo."
"guess so, jacky." i wound him up and shot him a small, closed smile. he opened his arms out and almost immediately I dropped everything I had in my hands and rushed into his arms. my head rested on his chest as he rubbed a comforting hand up and down my back.
"but hey, it's not like we're never gonna see you again, is it? just make sure to stay in contact and ring mum every other night and I should be there, hopefully," he mumbled. i smiled against him chest, blinking to make sure my tears didn't slip out (?). i pulled away and sniffled a little.
"i just, feel so unprepared and everything. i mean, i basically have nobody here to talk to. it's not like i know anybody here or have somebody, do i? i hardly know how this college shit works and we've hardly been in America for 2 years and now I'm already here? it's so difficult jack. it feels so foreign and I have no idea what I'm doing." fiddling with my fingertips, i shuffled from foot to foot.
"oh come on Mia, you're gonna be a natural. you're a bright kid and everybody will love you. well, not everybody. of course there are gonna be some bitches who are jealous but so what? that happens to everybody. you have your roommate and they'll make you feel welcome. just ask them for any help with lessons and room and it should be fine. trust me. and hey, maybe you'll find a boy, you never know," he chuckled, pushing my shoulder back slightly. i stared at the ground with a slight smile on my face. "shit, I've gotta shoot. but ring me or mum or sam if you need anything, alright? i love you and I'll see you later, moo."
"yeah, love you too." i mumbled, watching him run quickly down the hall towards the exit. sighing, i pushed my key in the lock and twisted it around, giving the door and slight shove, almost falling in the room as I did so. as soon as I opened the door, there was a smiling strawberry blonde with perfect teeth staring directly at me. i looked back, uneasy of what to do.
"hi, im mahogany, and you must be mia? we've heard all about you." her voice was quite high pitched but so perfect. she was gorgeous and seemed so nice.
"we?" i managed to get out. awkward much mia. i mentally face palmed and asked myself why I had to be so awkward.
"well yeah. didn't they tell you? there's 4 more of us." she said nonchalantly.
"4?! im guessing you're all girls, right?" i replied. she had a confused look etched on her face as tilted her head to the side.
"uh, not exactly- well how about you get your boxes in and unpack and we'll order some food and wait for the others to get back in, yeah?" she suggested with a closed smile. i nodded my head at her, still slightly confused. mum only told me I was getting one roommate? maybe they got it wrong? "i'll help."
"oh yeah, uh- sorry." i stammered, breaking out of my day dream.
