The time I spent with Sade was absolutely incredible. I was captivated by her subtle wit and dark sense of humor. She was someone I couldn't afford to let go of. However, I couldn't help but wonder why she chose to be with me instead of her man. Even though she acted like she was hard to get, she always seemed available to me.

If she were mine, there wouldn't be another guy who could take my place after just one day of meeting. I would be her fiercest competition, making sure she experiences the best sex that would always end with a climax, an account that is never in need of money, or a door she will never touch.

Soon enough my conversation with myself came to a halt after I heard a familiar tone of Maxwell Woman's Work indicating my mother was calling. Hurriedly answering the phone out of concern. "Hey, Davey my mom's warm voice replied, I could picture her smiling on the other end of the phone. It's always great to hear from you."

"How are you Davey?" She repeated.

"I'm doing good, ma. How are you?"

"Doing fine honey. I was just calling to see if you were still picking up my groceries today. Your father and I ran out of everything and can't get to the store."

"What happened to Trish?"

"Who?"

Forgetting my mother was in the early stages of Dementia. I repeated myself. "Trish, your caregiver. She's supposed to be there all week."

"Andy, Dave said there's supposed to be another caregiver here." My mother audibly whispered to my father as we were on the phone. "Oh–your father said she wouldn't make it this week. Something about a family emergency."

"Well-where's the other one... Miss.Wilson? She was supposed to start today."

"She's not here."

Feeling frustrated, I let out an internal sigh. Annoyed wasn't the word I was feeling. More like pissed off that I paid weekly and monthly for a service that never stuck. Since my mother's diagnosis we have been our fifth caregiver. They either complained about the compatibility with my parents and themselves or had some sort of state emergency. "Alright ma, I'm placing an order at Whole Foods. I should be there soon."

"You know what I want Davey?" My mother questioned. "Yes, I already have the grocery list from last time." I responded.

After placing an order for my parents' groceries for pickup at Whole Foods, I embarked on the journey towards their residence situated in the Crestwood suburb, about an hour away from my own place in Louisville. It had been several years since we moved from Alabama to Kentucky to accommodate my parents' careers and eventual retirement. Their home in the suburbs stood as a genuine testament to their dedication and hard work as teachers.

As I arrived at my parents' house, I immediately noticed that the exterior had been diligently maintained. The grass was neatly cut, trees had been pruned, and flowers had been strategically planted. Furthermore, the crops that were originally small watermelon seeds had now matured into a striking sight. I know it was none other than my mother's doing. She loved maintaining her home.
