I ran towards the sound of Hero barking and stopped dead in my tracks as I saw him.
There was Alfred, lying under a piece of the roof that had fallen on him.
I ran over to him and kneeled in front of him.
"Al?" I asked, gently tapping his cheek with my hand to wake him up. If he was even alive, that is. No! I couldn't think about that! I couldn't! I shook the negative thoughts from my head. "Alfred. Alfred! Al, please! It's me, Roddy. Your Precious Jewel. Your Gemstone. Come on, wake up! Say something!"
I saw him stir and he opened his eyes a little. "Roddy?" He managed weakly, reaching out a shaking hand and cupping my cheek.
"Oh, Al." I said, nuzzling his hand. "Don't you worry, I'll get you out of here."
"No, Roddy." He told me with a pained look. "You should get out of here before this old building collapses."
"Are you serious right now?" I asked him in disbelief. "I ran into a burning building to save the love of my life. I'm not leaving here without you, Alfred."
"You don't get it, Rod." He said sorrowfully. "I can't move."
"I know." I told him. "That's why I'm going to get this off of you. Then we can run out of here together."
"It's no use, Babe." He whispered as I tried (And failed.) to lift the piece of rubble off of him.
"You're right, I can't lift it." I said, shaking my head. A thought hit me and I called for Francis to come help.
"What is it?" He asked, running over to us with a limp Arthur in his arms. "Did you find Alfred? Huh!" He gasped at the sight before him.
"Yeah, I did." I told him, pointing out the obvious. "But, a piece of the ceiling fell on him and I need you're help to lift it off of him so we can get out of here."
"Oui! I'll help you!" He placed Arthur down gently on the floor and, with our combined strength, we managed to lift the piece of rubble off of him.
"Come on, Al!" I said, getting up and starting to run off with Francis, who was carrying Arthur. A few feet away, I noticed he hadn't started following us. I ran back to where he was. "Al? Come on. We need to go."
"Roddy, I can't get up." He told me. "And, even if I could manage that somehow, I still wouldn't be able to run."
"What?" I asked him, fearing for him. "Why not?"
"Beause," He started. "When that piece of the ceiling came down on me, it either broke my legs or parylized me from the waist down. Either way, I can't feel them. You'd better just go. I'm close to death anyways."
"I don't care." I stated. "I'm not leaving you, Alfred! I'm not leaving you here to die!"
"But, why?" He asked.
"Because without you, my life means nothing!" I exploded as tears streamed from my eyes.
"But, how?" He wondered. "Before you met me, your life was perfect. You were a rich kid living with his mom and siblings in a good home. That's way more than I had. And, after you came into our territory and met me, your life became a mess. Because of me and this gang, you lost your virginity, got a tattoo, changed everything about yourself, and even drank beer and smoked a cigarette. Let's face it, you would have been better off not knowing me." I saw his start to water and realized he was close to tears.
"Hey, look at me." I told him, lifting his chin with my hand. "You're right. Maybe it would have been for the better if we had never met. But, just so you know, I don't regret anything you listed. Well, ok, the first thing I kind of regret. But, before I met you, I felt like I was missing something from my life. And, when I got to know you, I realized that I had found my missing half. I found the love of my life. And I'm not about to give that up!" I took his hands in mine and draped them over my shoulders. "You hold on and rest, ok? I'll get us out of here."
He nodded and closed his eyes, resting his head on my shoulder.
Getting a good grip on his hands so he wouldn't slip, I ran out into the stairwell and down to the bottom floor, dodging debry along the way. We were so close to reaching the exit when I tripped over something and heard a loud SNAP!. I fell to the ground and dropped Alfred in the process. I cried out in pain as I held my leg, realizing that I had more than likely broken it. I soon felt myself getting dizzy from the smoke and heat. I remember seeing two firemen running towards us before I blacked out.
