The earth has changed completely from the smogged, environmentally damaged earth we knew.
Most cities and towns have combined to create a mess of miles and miles of city, just city. The city is divided up into multiple of their own 'safe' sectors, the underground, business, safety force, manufacturing and residential. Having tons of city is great for all the greed driven people to live in but is extremely detrimental to the environment.
The population of earth has become so big that there was no more space on top of earth, so they had to go underground, and I mean way underground. Little towns lit by dull pale white lights all the way through. The people below had to start completely over while everyone on top kept advancing. This didn't mean that underground their technology was way below the civilization on top, they were literally the same.
In the business sector there are a lot of high standing slim boring buildings, smooth narrow buildings that reach out to the sky and only then expand. And every here and there are minuscule elevators, like ants compared to the giant buildings, that take you underground. It's a long dark depressing ride down that I would not wish upon anyone.
The manufacturing sector smells purely like smoke and pollution that stings your nostrils but I guess you get used to it. It is just rows and rows of bricked buildings, like soldiers in a line, opening the flood gates of smoke into the atmosphere. The law restricting factories from letting of smoke has diminished allowing them to do what ever they want to the environment.
The safety force has got a lot of upgrades. There is hundreds of stations per sector. They have the best of modern vehicles, slim fast bikes of a piercing silver colour and the most intricate cars with options to suit the driver at the click of a button with a sharp black colour.
And the residential area has no idea of what is going on around them.
