I saw Jays black pickup truck pull up to the side of the road, just after nine. It was most definitely too early to be up, especially after last night, but I hadn't wanted to change my drunken plans. We had decided that we would meet at nine to go down to Sea forth, and see what we could find. I quickly grabbed my black canvas backpack and ran down the stairs to find my mom in the kitchen, huddled over her cup of coffee. "Where are you going so early? For someone who didn't get home until two, I would expect you to still be sleeping." She commented disapprovingly, taking a sip of her black coffee.
"Yeah, I'm heading out to work on a project with my friend," I somewhat lied grabbing my keys out of the dish on the counter.
"Ok, but last I remember none of your friends drive a black pickup truck." She raised her eyebrows leaning to see out of the front bay window.
"Yeah you don't know him, I have to run."
"Bye have-" She tried to finish but I was out of the kitchen scrambling into my checkered vans and out the door, taking a deep breath, and getting ready to embrace any awkwardness. I smiled and pulled open the shotgun door, jay moving his bag to leave me a place to sit.
"Hey." He smiled at me turning the key in the ignition.
"Hey." I said back, turning to buckle my seat belt.
"So I got it set up on google maps, it's about an hour and a half drive, so, make yourself comfortable."
"Oh, I didn't realize it was so far." We pulled out of my drive way, and I started feeling a part of guilt for making him drive so far.
"Yeah, but its OK, I have nothing better to do today." He claimed with a smile. "I hope you don't either."
"Well I mean, other than sleeping, I don't."
"Yeah, I wasn't sure if you would wake up in time after last night." He refocused on the road, the awkward energy I was afraid of starting to surface. "So, do you, I don't know, want to talk about it?" he uncomfortably asked.
"No, I'm good." I said too frankly. "I mean, it was just to make Ollie jealous, so there's nothing really to talk about."
"Yeah I guess." He quickly responded staring out the window.
The next half an hour consisted of small talk about school, graduation, and any other topic I could conjure up on the top of my head. According to google maps, we had a little less than an hour left. "Do you mind if we make a stop?" He pointed to the seven eleven on the side of the road. "I'm kind of hungry."
"Yeah sure," I said perking up. He turned into the parking lot and put the car in park. It was a pretty standard 711. I quickly made my way to the iced coffee section realizing I had neglected my body a key component in keeping me awake.
"You ready?" I turned over to see Jay holding a box of Reese's pieces.
"Why would you get those? Peanut butter and chocolate is an awful combination."
"What do you mean, it's literally the best combination." I shrugged and headed up to the counter, bought my coffee, and left the store, walking with Jay towards the car. We got in and he put the key into the ignition, but there was a lack of sound from the engine.
"Um. Is it alright?"
"Ah, I'm not sure what's going on." He kept turning the key, but the car wouldn't start.
