Chapter 1: Projects and Partners

My teacher's voice rung in my ears as I doodled on my paper, not listening to whatever most-likely-important thing he had to say. It was science class, and the fourth week of eighth grade. We've already had four language arts projects, math quizzes every single week without exception, a social studies quiz on Foreign Policy, and now science.

Science was a whole different story. It shouldn't be very different for anybody else, but for obvious reasons it was different for me. My table consisted of Historia sitting across from me, next to her being Oulo (of whom I mentioned before has a crush on the strawberry blonde girl, her name is Petra. He has a weird habit of biting his tongue for some reason), then next to me sat Levi (The short killer kid of whom sadly I was shorter than), and was my lab partner. The table to right of us was a good table. There was just one small problem. Hangie sat at that table. If Levi would ever be absent, me and Hangie would end up being next to each other.

"(Y/N)," I heard a voice.

"Hmm..?" I responded, looking up to find my teacher looking down on me. His hands were crossed on his chest, and he was giving me a sarcastic smile.

"No doodling during class," he made a remark. I just nodded wistfully.

"Do you have a partner for the project yet?" he asks. I make a humming sound and shake my head, indicating no. The water balloon project was introduced to us yesterday, and everybody besides me got a partner. At least, I thought.

"Okay, would you be alright if I paired you up with Ymir? She's not here today, she won't have one either," he asks, fully knowing that I better respond with a yes, because I have no other choice. If I did, he'd probably sue me in another way I didn't think was possible. I didn't mind even if I was forced, because Ymir's a nice girl. I would think that Historia had already asked her though, since they're practically dating.

"Uh... Mr. Ackerman... I already asked her yesterday," Historia piped up quietly. I jinxed it. Damn.

"Okay, when she comes back tomorrow I want for you all to decide on who's being partnered with whom."

"We can't be a group of three, can we?" I asked, without expecting too much of a surprising answer. But look at that, I jinxed it again.

"I'm not sure what you mean. Hange, didn't you say you had no partner either?" Mr Ackerman asked, once again, more of a statement than a question.

"Yep," she didn't smile back at him. That was odd. She usually always smil-- oh yeah, of course. I definitely saw that coming from a mile away.

There's no way in hell we want to be partnered up. That's what'll probably happen though. I really don't want to jinx this further, so I'll keep my mind at rest. Deep down inside, I really actually did want to be partnered up with her. I think I was just curious if she'd see my change throughout the years and we might become cool with each once more.

"Can't I just partner up with Ymir because I already asked? (Y/N) and Hange can just be together can't they?"

 Damnit Historia.

"Good idea. Hange, you're with (Y/N), you girls need to get together and start planning because you're already a day behind," he says, gives us another one of those sarcastic, thin smiles and walks off.

Me and Hange make eye contact for a brief second and look down. The look she was giving me right then was unreadable, because Levi's head was partially in the way.

"You two brats. Just break it up already. You want a grade, do you not?" he suddenly intervened after giving me and Hangie a piercing glare. I tap him on the shoulder and whisper to him.
