NATALIE
I think dancing is where everything started for me. It is the one thing that has never changed in my life. Maybe it's because it's always around and never specific. I don't know...
But I do know that a stage is where I prefer to be. The lights, and music, somehow everything just works out on stage for me.
That feeling I get when I'm performing has never been replicated, it's still the only thing that can make my heart soar.
I can be myself here
I remember my mom telling me to stop pointing my feet or they'll get suck like that. And I would say "then I'll be an amazing ballerina"
I snap into reality when I find myself landed after a perfect turn. I realize that the song and my daydream are over.
Finally my breathing becomes normal and my body begins to relax. I start toward my phone so that I can change the song when a large fat cat crosses my path.
He stops at my feet and meows a deep low meow. I roll my eyes and point my foot at him. He meows once more and then walks away.
I watch as he sits center stage, waiting for me to begin.
"Any requests Point?" I ask the fat fur ball. He blinks lazily in response.
My theater teacher Mrs. Waltz, an old stubborn women, brought in a kitten two years before my freshmen year. She hated him in her house because he would ruin her furniture and poop everywhere. She wasn't a very forgiving women. Anyway, the only time he wasn't a menace was when she would put on music.
She then decided to keep him in the theater; till this day no one really understands why she thought that was a good idea, but she did.
When my freshmen year came around I was told of this story and I gave the same confused expression everyone gave when they heard it. Apparently the trouble maker took a liking to being on stage and was constantly bribed with food to get him to leave. Hence the weight gain. But people still seem to keep him around, even with his constant meows and inappropriate sleeping spots.
The one thing I didn't realize when I got here was that he never got a name. Everyone just called him "cat" or "fatty", very original. Well that changed when I showed up.
I soon grew a fondness to this cat and observed his behaviors. He would always meow at my feet when ever I practiced or performed and I soon realized it was because he likes when I point my feet. People say it's because he thinks it's food, but I know better; it's because this cat loves the performing arts.
Come on, the cat would meow along to a live song!
It was also noticed that he would always come on stage whenever I was there. Even when we are live, he sneaks his way backstage and comes and sits wherever he can see me and my feet. This has awarded him the name Point. The only cat I know who sits and watches a theater performance.
I do have to say that we have created an amazing friendship together and now that it's my senior year, I find myself with him more and more.
Which is weird since he's a cat.
I turn a different song on and begin to glide across the floor. Study hall will be over in about ten min, which means I have time for three more songs.
Point stares at me attentively and meows whenever he sees something he likes. His head turns suddenly to look at a person who walks into the theater, he meows and walks to the edge of the stage, ready for the back strokes to begin.
I immediately know who it is, because Point only does that for certain people.
This includes me, my best friend Amy and my boyfriend Derek.
I didn't notice him until he was at the edge of the stage stroking Point.
Their relationship is a little different then ours. The truth is I would never had met Derek if it wasn't for Point.
I stop dancing and walk over to where Derek stands. He's broad shoulders and big arms make him look so much bigger then he really is. I watch as a piece of his chocolate brown hair slips away and falls in front if his forehead.
I squat down on the stage and begin to scratch Points ear, he approves with his normal meow. I look up and I am eye level with Derek which isn't a common occurrence, since he is about 6 foot while I'm only 5'5.
He grins at me, and I instantly melt.
"What dance was that?" He asks.
"It's my solo for the senior dance show" I say as I stop stroking Point. He try's to protest but knows it's no use and walks away.
"I like it." Derek says looking over the stage. I smile at him, and he pretends not to notice.
"What are you doing here? I thought you had training?" I ask, because Derek never misses practice. He practically does every sport out there and loves each and every one. Not to mention he is captain of most of them. So to see him away from is favorite activity is like seeing a fish out of water.
"I wanted to come and see. You were on my mind all morning." he says. Even after a year and a half he still melts my heart.
I smile at him and start to lean in when, the school bells rings and snaps us back.
I sign dramatically, which makes him giggle at me, I grab my bag and jump off the stage. Our fingers automatically intertwined.
"Bye Point" we say in unison.
We hear a low meow in response
