A scream shattered Nancy's fantasy world. It was that scream that reminded Nancy why she solved cases and why she never put herself above others. She pulled herself away from him and his comfort and back into the chaos of the masquerade.
The area that was once crowded with on-lookers at the jewel has dissipated. Instead, there stood a masked figure. His dark hair was slicked back into a small ponytail. He wore a matching dark suit. His overall look was deathly and ominous. In his arms was a knife pointed at a scrawny woman's neck with red hair like Nancy."Ruth!" The voice was Aunt Lucey's. The woman captive was none other than Nancy's cousin. Her voice seemed to break as if she was on the verge of tears but no tears fell on her cheek. Instead, a fire burned in her eyes. Her aunt was undoubtedly a Drew.
That same fire burned in Nancy's eyes. Nancy wasn't afraid. Instead, she was noticing the small details of the man. He was right handed, fairly tall. He was likely 6'1 or 6'2. And his eyes, were a piercing gray, like a sword glinting against the sun, taunting its opponent.
"Come any closer and I will kill her." His voice high with a thick French accent. The figure began to back up, trying to escape into the hall where all the royals stayed. It was a smart move, Nancy had to admit. It would have been empty since everyone was at the ball. That and the halls were endless. He could easily escape being followed. This man knew what he was doing. When he was at a safe distance. He dropped his hands and shoved Ruth forward pointing the knife toward her back. "Move." He said from the distant glancing back.
A storm of security officers raged into the ballroom. But it was too late. The pair disappeared into the maze of hallways and corridors of the old mansion.
Aunt Lucey asked everyone to move to the dining area where dinner was being served. Some guest took it hard and retired to their rooms for the night. When the lavish royalty had disappeared the ballroom seemed dark and unappealing, a sharp contrast from the liveliness just minutes before. Nancy made her way to her Aunt who was speaking to a man and likely his wife.
"What kind of business do you run here? This is an establishment I will not consider coming to again. What madness!" He roared at her. The guest making their way out turned to see what the commotion was about. His wife next to him flushed and tugged his hand. She mumbled something inaudible to him but you didn't have to be a detective to figure out she wanted him to stop.Aunt Lucey apologized profusely to the man but he didn't seem satisfied. Trying the calm the man. He pulled his hand aggressively away from his wife. Who took a step back in embarrassment.
"Excuse me, sir. I hate to interrupt, but your wife seems distressed. It wouldn't be good for the baby." Everyone but the man turned to see who was speaking to them--the prince. Nancy was so caught up in the aggravating man that she didn't notice the small bump the rounded the woman's stomach.
"Look, I won't have one of your workers inter-" The man turned angrily to face the prince. His eyes quickly scanned the tall and heavily ornated prince before he turned a tomato red. "I-uh."
The man grabbed his wife's hand and scurried away like a pink mouse suddenly realizing a cat was nearby. The prince turned, his pale eyes honing in on Nancy, as if she was his next prey.
"Thank you." Aunt Lucey smiled wearily. She followed the remaining guest to the ballroom hoping to lessen the chaotic order.
"Well...seems like I've saved you again." Nancy could feel the arrogant grin that was probably plastered on his face. She tried to ignore him and walk away from the situation, something she didn't usually do, but he was the exception. He quickly reached for her wrist, stopping her from moving.
"Wait! I do not want to bother which I seem to frequently do, but..." He hesitated. "I really want to help in this case. I know you are trying to solve this case. I saw the note."
"Look, I don't need another person to worry about or another..." Nancy hesitated as she looked into such a comforting face. "...distraction."
"Please, I am Prince. I can pull connections and talk to people important officials neither you or your friend can." His eyes seemed to plead like a puppy. Nancy kept composed, though, outwardly, but she gave in to his soft eyes.
"Alright. Meet me at the garden. You know the garden." Nancy pulled her arm away from his and disappeared into the chaotic halls.
