If she was always there, why did I never notice?

"Okay, I decided that I've been being a bit hard on you. So on popular request, you are going to have an end of the school year project, and I have picked out your partners!" Mr. Kale said, expecting us all to be excited. The whole reason we wanted to do a partner project was so we could actually choose who our partners are. With my luck, I'll be stuck with Trudy, the weirdest child ever.
"This project is going to be simple, and fun I think." He continued. "All you have to do is choose something, anything you want, as a pair, and write a report on it. It must be at least two pages. Okay, now onto your partners. Colton and Paige..."
He started listing the names. All I could think about was how much I hoped to be partnered with Quinn Armstrong. I've had the biggest crush on her for the longest time. She was a pretty blonde haired girl that got good grades and was nice to everyone.
".. and Harry." I snapped out of my daydream to the call of my name.
"Sorry? Who am I partners with?" I asked, clearly confused.
"Rebecca." He said bluntly.
"Who the hell is that?" I snapped, upset that I hadn't been put with Quinn and the fact that I was a naturally angry person.
"Um, me! Please don't be rude!" She leaned in front of me. She was exceptionally small, about 5'4 and curvy. Her hair was short and brown and she had pale grey eyes. I was surprised at the fact that I had never seen her before.
"Okay? Don't tell me what to do."
"I won't tell you what to do if you act of age. I think you and I will get along very well, Harry. I'll meet you at your place in twenty minutes."
She said, sashaying out of the room as the bell rang. Creative writing being our last period, everyone packed their things and left the building.
Usually, I would wait for my friends Louis and Zayn. But that day, I ran home. I had to get there before her.
As soon as I entered the door, I saw her sitting down, drinking tea in my living room.
"Who let you in?" I asked, slightly disgusted that this extremely infuriating female was sitting at my house.
"Your mom. She's a nice woman, also, she makes great tea."
"Ugh, just come up to my room." I groaned, leading her to my room.
"So, are you new?" I inquired.
"New, like in what sense?"
"New to the school."
"What?! I've been coming here since kindergarten! I live across the street from you, too. Bet you didn't know that either." She scoffed. As much as it would hurt my ego, I had to admit. She was right. How did I never notice her? I was always attentive, even as a kid. I must've seen her.
"So, are you smart and stuff? Because I don't know how to do this project."
"How smart do you have to be to decide on a topic and write about it?" She retorted.
"Do I not faze you? Other girls would kill to be in your position, I'm one of the hottest guys in school." I smirked at her. I just wanted to see her get riled up.
"I doubt that anyone would kill to be paired with you. You're a first class jerk. Plus, you're not even the hottest. Zayn Malik is. Now, shut up about how great you are, we have a project to do."
I scoffed. She was the first girl to ever stand up to me. "I wish I had gotten paired with Quinn instead." I muttered grumpily.
"Quinn? Quinn Armstrong?" She burst out laughing. "Quinn, figures. She's kinda my cousin."
