CHAPTER TWO
SHOWDOWN

THE SHUTTER WENT OFF, as Jade released her finger from the small button on the top of the camera. Her eyes shifted down to the screen, where the image of the river that flowed in front of her was displayed. She smiled in satisfaction with the photo, and looked around for anything else that might have been worthy of being photographed.

Photography had been something that was introduced to Jade before she moved to Tree Hill. Her mother had spent a lot of her time taking photos, so her grandmother had informed her. It was the only piece of her mother that Jade felt that she had. Her mother loved it, and she grew to love it just as much.

"You gonna tell us, man?" Skills asked Lucas, as he made another shot into the basket. He traveled around Lucas, until he was standing right beside him.

"It's nothing," Lucas informs him. It was clear that Lucas was trying to cover up any bit of enthusiasm that he might have had about the situation.

"Whitey asked you to play on the team, and it's nothing?" Skills asked, taking another shot.

"It's nothing, cause I'm not playing."

Jade scoffed, "It's nothing, cause he's an idiot."

The two of them turned to where she stood on the edge of the court. Lucas gave her an unamused look, whereas Skills agreed with her. She was off doing her own thing, but still managed to eavesdrop on their conversation.

"Luke, I've been guarding you almost every night since we was what? Like, 12 years old, right? And I won how many games?" He asked, stopping in place to focus on the conversation. "I don't know, it just seems like a waste to me man."

"Well, it doesn't to me. Don't you guys ever think that maybe we could belong here?" Lucas asked the boys altogether.

Jade took a break from finding things to photograph, and joined the group in the middle of the court, making sure to get out of the way every time one of them was to shoot.

"No. We belong here," He motioned to Fergie, Junk, and himself. "You've never belonged here."

"He's right, you know," Jade added in. "You're good, Luke. Crazy good."

Lucas furrowed his eyebrows at their comments and shook his head, "Thanks a lot, guys. Just shoot for teams."

Skills rested the basketball against his hip, wrapping his arm around it so that it wouldn't fall off. He moved in closer to Lucas.
