CHAPTER SIX
THE START OF SOMETHING

▼△▼△▼△▼

THE TWO GIRLS LAUGHED as they walked down the sidewalk, going on about something that had happened earlier that day in school. They turned towards the stairs that led up to Karen's Café. The sign that hung on the door read 'CLOSED', but Haley reached for the knob and opened the door.

Jade froze in place, before she even had a chance to walk in, as she noticed Lucas sitting at the counter. He had a newspaper in his hand, smiling about something that he was looking at. His attention was taken away, however, when he heard the door open. He turned towards the two girls. Jade pursed her lips, exiting through the door before any awkward tension built up.

Haley followed after her, calling out her name. Her friend's voice was soon mixed in with the voice of Lucas, who had ran out of the café as well. Jade turned back around at the sound of their voices, sighing.

"How long are we going to do this?" Lucas asked. Jade shook her head as she pretended to be oblivious to what he was going on about. The two of them had made sure to keep their distance from each other, all day, running off as soon as they noticed the other one was around.

"Do what?" She asked, looking past him, at Haley. Haley stood only slightly behind Lucas as she watched. She always seemed to be the one that was there, in the middle of their arguments.

"Avoid each other," He said.

"You tell me. You're the one that's upset," She snickered. She hated that she was always the one who was made out to apologize. Lucas was angry about the photograph, but then wanted to know why the two didn't want to be around each other.

"And, you're the one that lied to me," He argued. Jade frowned at his words. She felt bad for not telling Lucas about her encounters with Nathan, but she felt that he was overreacting, far too much.

"I don't know what to say to you, Luke," She admitted.

"Just tell me why you were with Nathan," He, almost, demanded. He approached Jade, a hard look in his eyes that, only recently, became all too familiar to Jade. "I mean, considering the past few weeks and what he's done."

"I can't," She simply said. It wasn't that she didn't want to, it's was the fact that she couldn't find the words to say to him. The whole situation had been so confusing to her, she didn't even really know what was going on between her and Nathan. They had barely developed a friendship, yet.

"You know how I feel about him, Jade," Lucas huffed, as he pointed his finger towards her. He began to walk away from her, and Jade rolled her eyes. She reached out for him and called his name.
