The wind blew in his face as he put out his cigarette. He was leaning on the edge of the railing of his balcony.
He was admiring the large lake that the apartment over looked.
He pulled his sleeve down when the breeze came through again. He sighed when he heard the sliding door open.
"Hey, sorry I came home late. I was out with Chelsea." Duncan said as he took a seat next to Donnie.
"It's cool I get it. I thought you two weren't seeing each other anymore?"
"We aren't. It's complicated, we both want different things but I still love her and she loves me. I don't know." Duncan said as he lit another cigarette.
Donnie shrugged, "Well i'm sure she'll figure it out soon. You guys always end up back together."
"Yeah, I hope so." Duncan sighed, "How are things going with work?"
Donnie chuckled, "You should know, we work together."
"I meant for you, dumbass." Duncan began to laugh.
"It's okay, a group of frat boys came in today. They all wanted matching tattoos. Beta shit."
Duncan smiled, "Me and Chelsea got matching tattoos in college. Well, she got a small black heart on her rib cage and i got a UFO in the same place, as a reminder that our love was out of this world."
Donnie laughed, "That's the dumbest shit I ever heard."
"Yeah? You clearly haven't been around Jeremy too long then." Duncan chuckled.
Donnie rolled his eyes, "I don't even listen to his bullshit. I just tone him out and think about, ya know, shit that won't make me lose brain cells."
They both laughed, Duncan took another hit from his cigarette and sighed.
"The worlds so fucked up."
"What?" Donnie asked.
Duncan shrugged, "I don't know man. It's just, unfair things happen to amazing people. I don't understand why."
"Because life isn't fair. I mean, you see all the terrible shit going on around you, but you never think 'Hey that could be me someday' Not until it happens. Until it's too late."
The brothers sat there, in silence. Nothing but the cold breeze blowing in the air could be heard.
Donnie looked back over to the lake, admiring the city lights that shined upon it.
"Leah always loved the view. She would come out here when she needed a break and just gaze at the lake."
"It is very pretty."
"This was her spot, this table. She bought this so she could sit in peace."
Duncan just stared at Donnie with sympathy. He knew no matter what he said, nothing would change the fact he was broken.
