she never thought the day would come. the future held it certainly, but it always seemed so distant. it was the day that would change everything. the day that the fourth wall was... BROKEN!

clearing her throat, Lauren brought the cold, rusting microphone to her cracked lips. the walls of her throat felt like she hadn't touched water for years and the hands she used to write her story were sweating with anticipation.

but before all is revealed, let's have some context!

the old pantry in the kitchen hadn't been opened since Lauren moved in and even the small handle was thick with a layer of dust. pushing the ancient key into the lock, the young woman could only pray that it was the right one.

when she felt the click of the lock opening, a pleased smile spread across her flushed face. with a determined tug, the door was open and offering an almighty creak.

and that's when she saw it. the key to contacting her characters; her creations. the fourth wall breacher.

Lauren watched the computer screen carefully. the cctv in the matchmaking service was running as she had planned for that day. every single inch of the place was covered.

she swallowed, taking in a sharp breath before clicking the button that would change the destiny of the characters she had watched grow and develop.

"hello?" her dry voice croaked loudly through the place. there was an immediate reaction from inside one of the offices. a simple yell from one of the workers.

"will you keep the noise down?!" the familiar voice of Cal screeched. "it's too loud in here!"

"no no, this is important," Lauren begged Cal not to ignore what she was saying or pass it off as someone causing mayhem. the blonde slowly emerged from his cave, his head spinning around to find where the noise was coming from.

"you can't see me," Lauren mused bluntly. "but i can definitely see you," Cal seemed confused for a minute, an innocent look gracing his normally grumpy features, but that was soon replaced with a humoured expression.

"i know you're playing with me, brother. be quiet, Cupid. i'm trying to work," Cal called out before making his way back into his office.

"i'm not Cupid for pete's sake! i am Lauren! the author of the story you're part of!" Lauren said exasperated. the whole building was silent for a moment, all eyes trained on Cal.

"what story? wh- oh just... SHHHHHH!"

"don't go!" Lauren pleaded one last time. "Cal i... Cal what would you think about having a match?"

Cal's eyes widened in surprise, most traces of emotion clear from his face.

"i... well... can you do that?" Cal still had no idea where the voice came from.

"of course! i can do whatever i want! now do you want one or not?"

and that was the start of a new beginning between author and characters. she had breached the fourth wall.
