I can't believe it. Today is the last day before I leave for university. Most of my high school friends are going to Leuven or Antwerp to study there, but for me, I wanted something bigger, something more exciting than moving away to a city 20 kilometres away from home.
I wanted to go further. So, naturally, I decided to move abroad, I'd study in New York City, the city that never sleeps, starting next week.
I already packed three weeks ago, not being able to hide my excitement to leave this god forgotten town in Belgium. I was going to study English Lit there for a whole year.
"Can you stop beaming now?" My sister complains when she sees me eyeing my bags smiling. She is going to start junior year this year, in a week as well.
"I'm sorry, Josie, I'd take you with, but by the time we have figured out how to take the subway in New York, you'd have to leave again." She rolls her eyes at me, but laughs after.
"Very funny, but don't you brag now, Amy. I'm going to run the school this year, I can feel it in my guts." She wriggles her eyebrows at me and enters her room, leaving my sight. I laugh.
"Sure you will! Keep me posted when you do!" I yell through the walls.
I jump up from my desk chair and make my way to my closet. What am I going to wear tomorrow? Something comfortable for sure, since the flight was about eight hours long.
I decided on my favourite flannel and some jeans. I put my glasses further up my nose again and tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.
Considering that I am done, I make my way downstairs where I find my mother and my stepfather.
"Hey guys." I greet them as I make my way to the fridge, craving some ice cream.
"Darling, come here, will you?" I frown, not knowing what I am needed for.
"Yes?" I enter the living room, where my mother is standing with a box in her hands.
"I want to give you this. We prepared it for you. Let's say it is a survival box." I squeal in surprise. I take the box from her and want to open it.
"No! No, you have to wait until you are alone in your dorm. It has to be a surprise." My mother smiles at me sweetly.
"Oh, thank you so much mom! I love you and I'm going to miss you crazy much." I have tears brimming my eyes and so does my mom. We hug each other.
"You silly, we'll come and visit you over there as soon as we can. I bet I can't keep your sister away from New York for longer than a month." I laugh.
"True." I give her a kiss on her cheek and check my phone for the time. It is 10.30pm and my flight leaves tomorrow at 7am, which means I have to get up at 4.
"I'm going to sleep now. See you tomorrow!"
*******
My alarm clock rings at 3.50 am and I groan because of the early time.
But soon after, I realise today is the day I leave this small country and move to New York.
I jump up and run to the bathroom, I et ready in 30 minutes and meanwhile the rest of the family has gotten up as well.
I put on my clothes and at 4.30, everybody is huddled outside by the car. My mother and my stepfather were going to drop me off at the airport, which means that I have to say goodbye to my little sister now.
"Bye Josie! I'll see you soon and have fun at school." I hug her tightly and she smiles at me.
"You have fun! Keep me up to date!" I nod and get in, when we take off, I see my sister growing smaller and smaller until she decides to go back inside the house.
