Jenavia
Caelum
I remember when I had entered Caelum for the first time like it was yesterday. I opened my eyes in a strange place that, to this day despite having been told it's real name, I call the Awake.
The Awake was a nearly blindingly bright place made of clouds that seemed to stretch on forever. It was empty, yet so full. There wasn't a specific point that the light was coming from, like a sun or star. The light seemed to simply radiate off the clouds. The word floating through my head at the time was pure. This had to be the purest of all things in existence.
I remember wishing I had had a mirror so I could see what my face looked like. From what I could see just by studying myself, I was wearing a plain, cap-sleeved dress as white as my surroundings that flared out slightly from my waist, the hem ending just above my knees. The dress, along with my pale skin, gave off a similar glow to that of the Awake. I had long hair that spilled over my shoulders like a golden brown waterfall, ending in a wavy curl at the middle of my chest. Upon feeling the rest of my hair, I discovered the texture wasn't just limited to my ends.
I was hit with a sudden realization that I must've been dead and was in Heaven. I didn't have any specific memories of the life I had led up to this point, which confused me greatly. I didn't know how I had died, or if I had left any family behind. I couldn't even have told you my name if I had tried.
I remember not being there long before a dark-skinned man appeared in a tailored suit as if he was soon to be attending a business meeting. He spoke in a language that wasn't English, which was just about the only thing I had managed to carry with me into The Awake. However, for some reason, I understood exactly what he was saying.
An Amicus was what he had introduced himself as. He confirmed the suspicions of my death and explained that my soul was judged as pure enough to enter the place called Caelum as an aurelieus.
His job, an Amicus' job, was to help me adjust and cross over fully into Caelum. He explained that I was called Jenavia and before I had awoken I was assigned a job that my soul was born for.
That job was a Lux. Basically, I was to help people repent their sins so that, when they died, they could move on to Caelum. With the snap of the Amicus' fingers, my head was suddenly flooded with all the basic knowledge I would need, including every single language in the universe. His snap also resulted in a pair of feathery, white wings blossoming from the middle of my back. They were large, he told me, larger than any pair he had ever seen in his years serving in Caelum. The soul determines the size of an aurelieus' wings. I was told I was destined for great things.
But that was years ago–in Caelum and on Earth. Countless missions, most of them with near-disastrous conclusions. I wasn't the best aurelieus, no matter what my wing size said. I broke rules, broke Caelum architecture (just that once accidentally), and nearly broke myself a couple of times. I can't even begin to count how many times I have appeared before the Lux Council to be heavily scolded for some idiot thing that I had done during a mission. Over 30 missions, 12 or so of them complete failures.
I was the problem child of Caelum. It wasn't an accident, either. Well, it wasn't that I was trying to fail my missions, but the other things I did were purely because I liked to ruffle the wing feathers of my bosses and other aurel.
For example: right now, I was dying my wing feathers black with a bottle of hair dye I had conjured out of the air. It was definitely an accident that I dropped a glob of dye on the wings, and it was definitely not an experiment testing whether or not an aurelieus' wings could be dyed a different colour. Definitely.
