SKYE WOKE UP IN A DARK ROOM. The light was dimㅡenough for her to spot the hooded figure sitting on the opposite of her, yet not enough to see the person's face. A sinister smile played on the stranger's lips. Skye moved around in her seat but failed to untangle the rope tied tightly around her wrists.
"Who the fuck are you and what do you want from me?" Skye asked. "And where the hell is this place? How did I even get he-"
"Too many questions," the stranger spoke. Skye paused momentarily.
"You know, you would probably sound much better without the voice-changing mask you have on," Skye said. The anonymous laughed. "Gosh, I thought I'd only hear that cringey evil laugh in movies."
"Enough with the mumbling," the hooded person spoke again. "Let's get to the point. I believe you still remember your brother who vanished four years ago?"
Skye froze on the spot, her eyes widened and her fingers curled into fists without herself knowing it. Pain washed over her as she tried to bit back the tears that were fighting to roll down her cheeks. Her hands were struggling against the rope, trying to break free. She was using too much force, it left a mark on her wrists, but it wasn't enough to break the rope.
"I wonder where have he been," the stranger said in a provoking tone. "Don't you?"
"The fuck you want?" Skye gritted. She tried her best to channel her emotions.
"I heard that you've been following your brother's footsteps these years, getting yourself involved in illegal transactions, in hopes to find him," the stranger said. "So, I have a job for you."
"Go on," Skye said.
"I want you to make Logan's Jewelry fall," the stranger explained. "But that is not the main point. The thing is, you will have to work with seven others. And yes, you will have to go undercover."
"What do I have to do?" Skye questioned.
"For now, just update me on their movements."
"What makes you think I'll help you?"
"You have no choice." A smirk was evident on the stranger's face. "You want to know where your brother went? You'll find the answer among them. Besides, aren't you in need of money right now? It's a win-win situation for the both of us. So, is it a deal?"
Skye hesitated for a while before answering, "deal."
* * *
Skye's head came in contact with something hard right after she agreed with the hooded stranger's plan. She found herself back in the small apartment she rentedㅡyes, the one that she's still in debt for three months worth of rental. Whatever happened back there felt like a dream, except for the fact that the back of Skye's head hurtsㅡa sign that she was knocked out and that the conversation was real.
Skye ignored the stinging part of her head and picked up the note left beside her. There's an address, and below it wrote: you'll meet the seven others here three days later, good luck ;). She cringed at the sight of the smiley face and tore the piece of paper into shreds, burning it with a lighter. Well, it's better to be safe than sorry.
"HEY, OPEN UP THE FREAKING DOOR, YOU FEMALE DOG!"
Skye rolled her eyes when she heard someone banging on the door. She loathed that familiar voice. That, was Miss Ruthenburg, the landlady that rented the apartment to Skyeㅡwho, I repeat, is in a huge debt. Skye finds the fact that Miss Ruthenburg hates swearing so she replaces it with another word, quite amusing.
"I SAID OPEN UP THE DOO-" Miss Ruthenburg leaned forward, nearly falling with her face to the ground. Skye opened the door all of a sudden, which caught Miss Ruthenburg by surprise. "Finally, you decided to open up this fooking door."
"I know this isn't important butㅡ" Skye paused and tapped her finger on her chin thoughtfully, "ㅡdoes the word 'fooking' even exist?"
"Don't you try to mess with me, Parker." Miss Ruthenburg clenched her teeth, refraining herself from yelling at Skye and causing a scene. "Give me the money and I'll scram immediately."
"I don't have it," Skye calmly replied, leaning her shoulder onto the door frame. This fueled Miss Ruthenburg's anger.
"What do you mean by you don't have it?" Miss Ruthenburg hissed.
"Can you calm down and let me speak?" Skye asked. "I'll get you the money, just give me two more weeks."
"Why should I trust you, again?" Miss Ruthenburg glared at the young girl in front of her.
"Well, uh-"
"No more chances for you, young lady." Miss Ruthenburg crossed her arms in front of her chest. "I won't be letting you off this time. You, get of of the house, now."
Skye gulped. She swore that she literally saw flames around the landlady. Great, so now she's homeless and given a dangerous job as a spy, not to mention that the boss is unknown. Wow, life is certainly getting "exciting".
