Yesterday we heard a rumor of a ship that docked a few days ago. But there was something odd about it. Lots of its crew had been found dead, their bodies covered in these dark, almost black, spots. It sounded a little peculiar, and we were not sure whether or not to believe it. However, today when I went to town, there were a few Jewish families. They had come here seeking refuge, because other Jews were being blamed for the sickness, and were being killed.
One mother walked over to me, she looked to be in her mid-30's and very poor, and had a little girl who was trailing behind her. "I hardly have enough money to support myself, please, take my daughter." I was a bit confused at first, but then she continued. "Please, I'm begging you. Just adopt her into your family. Her name is Melody, she is only 4, and she doesn't eat much." "I'm turning 5 in eight days!" Melody smiled real big up at me. "Mamma said that when we got here I had to live with a new family, because we don't have enough money. Are you my new family?" I wasn't sure what to say, but said yes. We had enough money to support a third person. I just hoped Mother wouldn't mind. I had extra money to spend on myself, so I used some of it to get the supplies to make another bed and some clothes, then I continued on my search for seeds.
Then we headed home. Mother was confused when I showed up with Melody, but quickly took her in as her own after I explained.
