'Pain Behind Your Eyes'

_______________

Early rays of the morning broke through the clouds, streams of light flashed forward. Morning dew coated the grass and trees in an enamel-like coating. It was mornings like this that make me feel content. Walking in the orchard was an everyday routine for me. The grass bristled at the weight of my feet as I padded over to the large apple tree. Grasping the reigns, I lead my steed over to the dark growth. Tying the reigns to the tree, I ran a hand through my hair.

I opened the satchel tied tightly around my waist and reached inside for my dagger. There was a crunch of the grass that did not come from me or my steed. A pinch of anxiety flashed through my system as I strained to hear my surroundings through the brisk wind.

"It's a wonder that you still remember this place," I muttered, my voice strong. My eyes catch the sight of brunette hair and fancy lace. I tilted my head backward to see her. She smiled, red lips twitched in mischief. She stepped forward, but still kept her distance.

"It's been a while." She breathed, eyes searching the orchard with familiarity. "Just thought I'd stop by. I did not think I'd run into to you."
"So, you think this is just coincidence? Nothing is a coincidence with you." I bit. She feigned hurt, "You wound me, Kitten." My eyes lit up at the pet name. Memories flooded in of the past, but I immediately pushed them back. Now is not the time for weakness.

"You should probably be on your way, your majesty." I walked over to the tree, standing on the tip of my toes to grab an apple, "Not a lot of people like you 'round these parts." "So, I've heard." She spoke softly. I bit into the apple, leaning my attention to my horse. The steed stared right at me and snorted. I reached to grab another apple for her and fed her quietly. I caught the sight of lace swaying in my peripheral vision. She stood next to me before reaching to grab one of the juicy fruits. "It's been a long time, Regina." My words came out slower than I anticipated. There was sadness in my tone and I regretted opening my mouth. A sigh could be heard, "I know." The amusement and malice between us dropped. My silence was contemplative at her tone.

"You haven't been here in years. Queenly business in the way?"

She hummed, "Perhaps."

"So why now all of a sudden? You finally remembered your old life or did you come to burn it down?" I muttered through my teeth.
"That's my business of what I do here, not yours."
I clutched the apple in my hand. She sounded so insouciant it made me want to chuck the fruit at her head.

"You just left without saying goodbye." Hissing in dismay, I threw the apple away. I was quick to bring it up. It has been so long, how dare she show her face all of a sudden. I heard the ruffling of her dress. I turned to face her, eyes full of questions. "So, what do you have to say for this? You just left me behind and never bothered to visit or write to me again."

Regina's eyes flashed. An unreadable emotion appeared in her chocolate brown orbs. She parted her lips to speak, but nothing came out. My eyebrows furrowed. "Nothing to say?"

"(Name) I can explain--"

"Explain what, Regina? That you left because you found someone better? Did all that money and power go to your head that you never even bothered to write to your only friend!?" My vision blurred with upcoming tears. I didn't let them fall; I wouldn't give her the pleasure of seeing me cry.

"I never meant for it to be this way." Her voice was low, teeth bared. The pain was obvious in her expression. "I wasn't able to. My life changed so fast I could barely comprehend it."
