I found myself before the doors of the sunset ballroom amongst the crowds of swishing skirts and colourful doublets. The doors were held by two footmen garbed in sleek doublets of cherry red and clean black pants decorated with silver filigree at the cuff, soon the mass of jostling people propelled me through the doors and is as left to gasp at the inside of the room. The walls were draped with the midnight cloth and the ensconced tallow lamps were glowing brightly illuminating the rainbow of clothes before me. The tables along the wall were groaning with plates of crackers, cheeses, bread, smoked meats and ripe fruits, pastries, and even a few dishes that must be for foreign guests.
“Good evening ma'am, may I have the honour of accompanying you this evening?” A voice behind me announced. Turning I saw a man several years older then myself with sleek chesnut hair, a forest green doublet, black trousers and a simple circlet of gold.
“Jaxon!?”
“ Yes sweetheart that's my name, don't wear it out” he smirked
“ But…! I thought you had to stay with your dad?!”
“ Well...he decided since, after all, it was my birthday party, I could have some fun. Plus, I have a date with a beautiful girl so I really couldn't stay.”
“ Um...okay then….do you want to get something to eat..?”
“ Whatever you want darling… I will thoroughly enjoy this evening regardless if you ruin it or not!” He declared and started towards the food.“ Hey! Fyre!” Someone else shouted and suddenly Anais was beside us and...another someone. “ Fyre, Jaxon, this is Sir Anthony of Elden!” She explained clutching the poor man's arm. Without warning Anthony dropped to one knee and stared at the ground in an obvious sign of respect.
“ Good evening your Highness, Prince Jaxon, may I offer you birthday greetings from my city of Elden.”
“ Good evening Sir Anthony, please call me Jaxon, it's my birthday and I'm tired of formalities, tonight we drink as friends!” Suddenly it happened again, thspe dizzy feeling, clutching Jaxon's arm I struggled to steady myself without causing any attention.
“ Fyre?” Jaxon asked, without my noticing, he had led my towards the food leaving Anais and Anthony alone again. “ Are you okay? You looked really dizzy….is anything the matter?”
“ No it's nothing, I just got a headache.” I lied and hurried off towards an inviting pear.
He was an excellent dancer. The music seems to fill the air as the musicians took their places and began to play a smooth, beautiful waltz, slowly pairs of dancers swarmed into the center of the room and soon, the whole cooler was filed with laughing, dancing couples. In his balcony seat, Morfran watched the dancers as the waltzed across the tiled floor, moving with the very soul of the music. He took my arm and led my to the center of the sunset ballroom and there, before all the lords and ladies, I danced with Prince Jaxon.
The night was perfect. We danced again and again, sometimes there were other couples dancing with us, other times we were alone, waltzing for all to see. Anais and Anthony joined us, he twirled her around and she giggled and drew closer to him. I saw none of this, I was looking at Jaxon, Jaxon was looking at me, we were dancing close together, almost eye to eye and we could each feel it. He smiled down at me and with a jolt I realized I had been staring at him for an inappropriate amount of time. “ So Fyre darling...are you enjoying the night?” He asked innocently as if women staring at him was not unusual, which I suppose, it probably wasn't.
“ I suppose...well it's rather hard to enjoy oneself while stuck with an idiot like you….” I mused. A chuckle escaped his lips and soon I was laughing softly to. We kept dancing, letting the music and our emotions to control our bodies as we danced and danced, never letting eachother go.
It hit me like a cannon blast. The ballroom and Jaxon’s face swirled in the dim light a woman screamed, the fire from the lamps created a blinding ,garish imprint on my eyelids. Black and red spots popped before me for a fleeting instant and then I felt the floor and Jaxon's arms beneath me. He was running then. Where? I do not know, I was in his arms, I was safe. My room. There are people all around my bed, they were speaking in low voices, cracked!omg my eyelids open their Burroughs images came into focus. Anais, Joel, Anthony, and Jaxon stood talking with a man, every once in a while, someone's eyes would flick to me and then away again as if I cared whether they looked at me. One by one they all left.
Jaxon stayed. Not Anais. Only him. We sat in silence in the empty, dark, room just waiting for the other person to speak. Jaxon obliged.
“ What happened?”
“ I have no idea. It just did.”
“ Has it happened before?”
“ Only twice before now, once at the ball, once yesterday….i don't know what it was...do you think I was drugged?”
“ I doubt it, there is no one you ever talk to besides Anais and I.”
“ Oh ha ha ha, very funny, but really…..”
“ I have no idea Fyre...can you tell me anything else?”
“ I told you Jaxon, I don't know anything.” I replied starting to get frustrated. “ What do you what to know anyway?”
“ I'm pretty sure you know by now Fyre.” He said putting his head in his hands.
“ Umm...you fear for my safety..?” I guessed stupidly.
“ No Fyre. The reason is…. I like you...a lot…” dead science filled the room like a cloak of darkness. “ I'm sorry.” He he sighed and rose to leave, “ I knew you didn't feel the same anyway….”
“ You're wrong…” I said but he was already gone, the door closing behind him.
