"Um, hey Dad?" I asked while pouring myself a bowl of Lucky Charms. He didn't look up, just said a gruff "What?" before taking a bite of his cereal.

"I haven't told this but, I'm going to California-" I got cut off as my dad laughed at something on his phone. "Uh... Dad?"

No answer.

Maybe I was getting mad but I almost yelled out my question. "Dad are you even listening to me?!" I asked. His next answer was just enough to make me cross the line.

"Oh yeah, that's great Violet." He replied, still looking down at his phone. "OMG you're so unbelievable!" I said pushing in my chair. I walked over to the sink and threw my half-finished bowl of cereal in it. I stormed off to my room, hoping that I didn't crack the bowl. Only then, my father looked up from his phone.

*30 minutes later*

Michelle finally rang my doorbell but before she could say hi I pulled her into my room.

"Sit" I said as I pointed to a chair with no back. I immediately started braiding her golden brown hair. It always calms me down. She was expecting an explanation but when I didn't say a word she spoke up, "What's wrong Violet?"

I didn't say anything but I started braiding her hair faster. "Oh no, they didn't cancel the contract did they?" She said, her eyes widening with every word.

"No, it's just my Dad, I can't believe him! I tried to tell him about going to California but he ignored me and payed more attention to his stupid phone than his own daughter." I said, fuming.

"Well, haven't you thought about how your mother's death could have aff-" I shot her a menacing glare and she immediately shut up.

"You just had to bring it up, didn't you?" I said choking up a bit at the last part.

*FLASHBACK A YEAR AGO*

"Hi sweetie! I'm coming back from work. Uh idk if you're asleep or what but I'm leaving this voicemail to tell you that I'm picking up ice cream from the store for our GIRLS NIGHT just like you wanted! I'll see ya at home! Love ya sweetie."

She never did come home that night. The only thing I heard was a knock at our front door and a deep person's voice saying, "she's gone." I knew what they meant, and I passed out as soon as they said that.

It was all my fault. It was all my fault. It was all my fault. That drunk driver never should have taken the wrong exit. But... if it wasn't for me, my mother would still be alive. I shouldn't have asked her to get ice cream. She wouldn't be in the casket right now. She would be with me, eating popcorn and watching our favorite movie. She would laugh with me at the funny parts and cry with me at the end. But I didn't know I would be crying alone at her end. Silent tears stream down my face as I watch dirt be thrown on my mother's beautifully designed box.
