Danielle’s POV:
I woke up to Niall singing in my ear.
“So this is the New Year… and I have no resolutions…” He half whispered. His scruff rubbed my cheek and ear.
“I hope you have resolutions. We can always be better.” I yawned.
“I wish the world was flat like the old days… then I could travel just by folding a map…” He continued.
“You skipped to the ending.” I teased.
“Well, I like that part.” He chuckled.
I sat up in bed and stood on the mattress. “So everybody put your best suit or dress on. Let’s make believe that we are wealthy for just this once.” Niall joined in on my jumping and singing, “Lighting firecrackers off on the front lawn as thirty dialogs bleed into one.” We sang in unison.
“I like when ya sing.” Niall spoke his mind after I plopped back down onto my bottom. I smiled.
“I like when you sing.” I rested my hand on his shoulder. He snickered and shook his head.
“Are ya ready to spend the New Year with me?” He rested on his back and rubbed his eyes.
“As long as there’s alcohol.” I ran my fingers through his hair.
“We can go get some later.” He closed his eyes and concentrated on my touch.
…
“We used to go here all the time, Niall.” Libby reassured him from the backseat. He sat in the passenger seat while I drove.
“But ya go here when it’s below freezin’?” His nose was red and his cheeks were flushed.
“It’s pretty. And not a lot of people show up.” I interrupted. “Besides, you never visited the sea in Ireland when it was cold?”
“Not very often.” He replied.
“It’s fun. Danielle and I would stop and get hot chocolate and then we would huddle together under a bunch of blankets and watch the tide.” Libby reminisced on old times.
I parked behind a building and hauled a mountain of blankets while Niall carried multiple cups of hot chocolate which we bought from the gas station. Libby waved us in her direction. She was already close to the ocean’s edge. It was a long drive down to Branford, but it was always worth it.
Niall and I sat close to each other under at least five blankets while Libby sat by herself and read a book. I couldn’t believe she liked to read. It had only been a few months since she last told me that reading was boring.
“What’s that about?” Niall asked Libby. He shivered next to me and I rested my hand on his knee.
“Maybe you should read it.” Libby replied. Now I couldn’t believe my ears.
“Well, what’s it called?” Niall’s eyes began to water from the icy wind.
“Girl, Interrupted.” She mumbled.
“Hey! That’s my book!” I ripped it from her hands and eyed my favorite quotes which were highlighted. I saw my sloppy handwriting slanted on the edges of the pages; pointing out key points and jotting down my thoughts.
“Sorry… Are you mad?” She glanced at her hands.
“No. I just want it back. But it’s not exactly a book it’s – “
“I know. It’s a memoir.” She got smart with me. I rolled my eyes and handed it back to her.
“Wow. I didn’t know ya liked t’ read.” Niall bumped me with his shoulder.
