Chapter 1:

All I hear is the pounding of my feet as they echo the walls of each corridor. Running, trying to breathe and more running. How could they have caught up with me? The only thing on my mind is to find the people I once knew. They need to be warned before their worst nightmares can become reality. The smell of sweaty teenagers and hormones filled my nose the closer I got to the main hall.

Which way was it, I do not remember this school being this large. I pass a sign that has a woman on it and the word 'bathroom' written in red. These bathrooms were never here before. Remodeling has to be the answer. My eyes skim the options in front of me as I come to a crossroads. I can either continue straight, go up a set of stairs, or take a right.

In the distance I can hear the bass of music playing, as I would assume is the direction of all of the students. It must be a dance night. I never got to go to any of those while I was here, my mother never let me and then I was gone. I always wished she would have allowed me to experience the life of a teen before my life came crashing down.

I wonder what my life would be like if I got to continue living here and grow with my friends. The people that I hold most dear; closest to my heart. Would Ty and I be together still, would I be going to this dance, would I still have good relationships with my friends? Too many questions that will always be unanswered.

I decided to take my chances and continue straight. A flash catches in the corner of my right eye, as I walk into a big hall, chairs around tables and a few people at a drinking fountain. I do not recognise these people and thankfully they pay little to no attention, to me as I slip into the nearest doorway.

The walls are covered in lockers. Purple and gold switching every other locker; probably the school's colors. This must be the main hall. Why did I have to come during the night? I would never find them. I hope they all just moved away from this dreadful town, hopefully. The deepest part of me just hopes "The Society" will never find them. There is a possibility that they will all be safe. Who am I kidding? If any of them are like me, they will be found, regardless of where they are located.

Apparently it is actually really easy to track down our kind. They have older "muties" as they call us, that have a reasonably accurate tracking ability. They have been following me, but I can hide my tracks well for up to a mile. They have so many of us on their side, I am unsure if we'll ever truly be safe. I have to at least try to protect them though, they have no idea what is coming.

I have to keep searching for my friends, they have to be safe. I promised myself to protect them at all costs. I may be just one person but this has been my plan since I 'left', I can not just give up hope now.

I heard someone walking closer, I ducked to the other side of the wall. My heart began to pound as the footsteps got closer. "Why does he have to be so cute, my emotions are just going crazy." A familiar, but distant voice came from around the corner.

"I totally understand what you mean, Tucker drives me insane all the time. Can't wait till we give in to each other tonight, but I am so nervous. It's supposed to be special and honestly I'm not sure that I'm even ready. I feel a bit pressured in this situation." I know that voice. Adri.

How are they going to react, I didn't even have a chance to warn them I was coming. It's been years. No one even knows the truth. I had to keep a low profile, and stay off the radar as much as possible. The first thing I did when I decided to come back was dye my hair, it is black and down to the small of my back. Their footsteps echo off the walls adjacent to me.

Maybe it was too soon for them to see me. Maybe they would have been safer if I was not here endangering their cover. I should not have come. No! I promised to protect them. I was pacing while thinking, my mind was exploding with all of the what ifs.
