Dear Etienne Jay,
It is a pleasure to come into contact with you again, my friend, Etienne, at the start of this new year. My family has been faring well, although they wish for me to be wed soon. I do not wish to marry. However, it isn't just my interests that are the ones that matter, unfortunately, I am the only child, therefore it is in my hands to have this family live on. My Dearest Friend, Etienne, how have you been? Secured yourself a job? A house? I apologize for my lateness on returning your favor*, alas it has been busy, with the new year beginning and whatnot. How long has it been since we have last seen each other? I pray that you are still in good health.
Sincerely,
Constant Matthews*A 'favor' in this context means a letter that was written to someone previously
