The sun rose above the Perilstan streets. One could hear the buzz of traffic and hum of early morning conversations of passing civilians. The whole city came alive in the mornings... well... accept that one permanently dead abandoned coffee shop...
Inside the small shop, was a mini fridge, scrapbook, wooden chest (that held only a few clothing articles), an old, dusty mattress, and a blue-haired girl sleeping on it. She opened her tired eyes and sat upright. she put on a fresh (well as fresh as you could get from washing your clothes in a bucket of dirty water) set of clothing, and stuffed her current savings into her jean pocket. She made her way to "The Grocer Spot", the closest local farmers market. She'd waited three weeks to restock on food and was eager to chow down.
She went through the fancy-shmancy wooden doors, which literally EVERY Perilstan store and home had. She picked up the usual medium sized bag of mixed produce and jug of water. She walked up to the checkout counter, which would've normally had a massive line if it weren't so early. She walked up to the counter and was met face to face with the ,always snarky, cashier, who'd been ruder to her then usual ever since she may have bumped into him, making him drop and break his new 5,000,000 klein ( 1,000 klein = 1 dollar) computer.
The girl put 26,000 klein on the counter, "This should cover it."
The cashier smirked, "Sorry girly, that can only cover the water."
She raised an eyebrow, "Um excuse me?" she began, "The price tag on the water says 10,000, and the food says 16,000. And if you used that stupid brain of yours you'd know that that equals 26,000 klein. It's simple math really."
He laughed, "Well the price of the food has been upped to 40,000 and the water is 20,000 so no, that's not enough. Sorry" he stuck out his lower lip making a fake pitty face.
"What?!" protested the girl, slamming her fish on the counter , "You literally just rang up that other lady who had more than me for less than that!"
"Well girly," the cashier continued, "that's the price for street crap, like you"
The girl was enraged, "Street crap?! Who the hell are you calling STREET CRAP?! And besides, is that even legal?!"
He smirked again, she wanted to smack that stupid smirk off his stupid face, "Are you legal?" The girl opened her mouth, but no words came out. He had a point, and she hated it. Without any thought, she slapped him in the face. Not lightly either.
The boy was flabbergasted. "S-security!" Two manly looking guards turned their way.
And at that very moment she knew.....She screwed up.
The girl bolted as the guards chased her. She ran into the traffic that was just beginning to build and sprung onto the tops of the cars. She'd managed to snatch up her "purchases" before she'd bolted. "I'm gonna have to find a new grocery store" she thought solemmly as she continued to hop on the cars.
After several honks and angry drivers, she seemed to have lost the guards. She leapt off the final car and into an alleyway.
"I can't seem to locate any source of all the magical energy in this place"
The girl turned around to see a tall figure with a grey hood. Magic? Wasn't that stuff illegal. She noticed he was talking into some sort of earpiece. The figure turned around and jumped back, startled at the sight of her.
"How... how much of that did you hear...?" he asked warily.
The girl had a slight smirk and arms folded in front of her, "Well, I heard magic" She heard him mutter "shit" under his breathe. Suddenly, all the busy noise of Perilstan went silent. The girl didn't know, or really care for that matter, why. She decided to approach the figure, but by the time only a few feet separated them, he got into a fight stance and formed some sort of white energy ball in his hands
"Tell no one what you saw or heard" he said through gritted teeth, "and maybe I will spare your life"
Surprisingly to him, the girl busted out laughing. "You won't 'take my life'" she snickered.
"And why not?"
She smirked, "Because I'll take yours first" she stuck out her palm and conjured a blue-green flame. He had no idea how long she'd been yearning for such a worthy opponent.
She lunged at him, but he put up some sort of... magical force field, which sent the girl flying backward.
"Wait!" he exclaimed.
Still on the ground, the girl rolled her eyes, "What, you too scared to fight me now?"
"N-no!" he sputtered, "but you could've told me you were like... ya know... um..."
The girl interrupted, "Yes because it's totally smart to tell a random stranger wearing a hood that I break the law every day."
"Ok fair point" he admitted, "but maybe I wouldn't have... threatened you..."
"Ok first of all," the girl began, "you suck at threatening. And second, if you took off that stupid hood and told me your damn name, maybe I'd trust you a tad bit more"
"Name but no hood," he stated, but the girl had already yanked down his hood. He had silvery white hair and piercing grey eyes. The girl would not admit this, but he was.. aesthetically pleasing... (and he could quite honestly say the same about her)
"Now your name" she commanded.
"Zachary Strongheim"
The girl wore a slight smile, obviously pleased with herself, "I'm Merica"
"Well Merica", Zach started, "I... I'd like to ask you something..."
