Kakashi was always the one to go through her window late in the night after a mission, whether he was wounded or not, it was a habit after the war he picked up; to always see her. When the war had ended, he always went to see her to see if she was okay. At first, she wasn't, and honestly, neither was he, but they found comfort in each other. They understood each other in ways they thought no one else did, of course neither of them spoke of it, but they just knew.
But tonight, it was her who climbed through his window. She pulled herself through, her body visibly weak. Kakashi was already by her side before she could put two feet on the floor.
She was a mess."Your chakra's low, Sakura." he spoke in s low tone as he guided her to his bed, supporting her so she doesn't fall. She leaned against him, her fatigue taking over after fifteen hours of working, and six hours of surgery on Anbu who were on the brink of death.
She laid on his bed, too tired to give him a response. Kakashi started taking off her shoes, already knowing what's happening. He always worried for her, telling her to take some days off. She was a workaholic and rarely took days off. It finally took its toll on her.
"Kakashi." She whispered.
"Hm?"
"Can I ask of a favour?"
Furrowing his brows, he stared at her.
"Of course you can, Sakura."
Her chest rose and fell slowly, her chakra dangerously low.
"Hold me."
His breath caught in his throat, off-guard at her quiet, shaky words. Of course they've hugged and held each other close, but this, this was different. She needed him, she needed him to hold her close so she doesn't break. He knew she wasn't going to die, but the thought scared him. He was in deeper than he thought.
What they shared may not have been spoken of, but their actions screamed from the rooftops of their unspoken connection.
Holding her close to him, arms wrapped around her in a way where she felt like nothing could harm her. She felt safe. She felt home.
Kakashi knew he loved her, it was something he admitted to himself after years of denial, but the mere thought of her not returning the feelings always made him coward away.
But not tonight. The way she held onto him, and the way she pulled him close whenever he moved, made him realize that, after all this time, she has been returning those feelings -- in her own way.
"Sakura." He whispered.
"Hm?"
Kakashi didn't reply right away, in fact it took him 5 minutes of hesitating before he just sighed and decided it can't wait any longer. It was now or never.
"I love you."
A soft chuckle escaped her lips, and he could feel the smile on his chest. "I know."
Kakashi smiled and rubbed small circles into her back as she drifted off into sleep. Maybe, just maybe, that after all the messed up shit he went through and all the pain he felt throughout his years of living, that life was worth while-- as long as she was by his side.
