"You, Sir, are the slowest guy I've ever seen." I teased.
He jumped over a fallen branch. "And you, Lyn, are a total airhead."
The weight of the bag was pressing down on me, slowing me down. I glanced at Theo, who held the bag as though it was no big deal.
"Stop right there, or I'll...!" Officer threatened.
We turned and ran into an alley. It, like most, was dark. An unknown smell wafted into my nose and I gagged.
"Get back here!" he hollered.
My legs felt like breaking into tiny little pieces, and the bag kept slapping my back like an over-enthusiastic idiot.
As we covered more distance, it dawned on me that there was a brick wall right in front of us. My nerves tangled up, almost strangling my hope. The only thing that kept us from surrendering was the fact that we were not really bad climbers and of course, the money.
Theo and I exchanged glances. We knew exactly what to do.
Officer was not far behind us. In fact, he was catching up rather fast upon noticing the brick wall.
"Race you to the top!" Theo smirked and swung the bag in front of him, so that he could grip the wall and the bag at the same time.
We climbed. Obviously, he was going to win. He was always the stronger one, which I would never admit.
It didn't keep me from trying, though.
Up and up I went. Theo was leading. Not long later, he was already at the top, staring down at me and Officer.
"Hurry up," he reached out a hand. "Almost there!"
I climbed higher and higher, reaching out a hand for Theo...
The wall groaned and crumbled, shifting. Theo widened his eyes and tried to pull me up, but the wall was too unstable.
That was when I felt someone grab my leg.
"Finally, you're coming with me, together with your friend." Officer hissed.
Being pulled down, I looked up at Theo. He was about to fall.
The wall was clearly enjoying this.
Theo's face was clearly displaying his agony as he fought to steady himself. He wasn't having much luck, though.
"I'm sorry." Theo muttered, anguish obvious in his voice.
"What?"
Officer tugged, pulling me down even further.
"THEO!"
Theo disappeared behind the wall, leaving me dangling from the wall like an idiot, with Officer holding my leg.
"Let go!" I cried out, but my mind wasn't on it. I was still thinking about Theo.
I tried shaking my leg, but Officer didn't even budge.
The bricks fell off the wall. Whoever built this wall was either placing the bricks using glue with only one hand, or that it was too old. The wall looked rather new, even if there were some dirt and weed, so I doubted it was the latter.
I tried to avoid the bricks, but they hurled at me as though the ground was some sort of hidden magnet.
"You...you will...oomph!"
I risked a glance down.
Apparently, a brick had struck him on the head. I winced as I saw blood tricking down the side of his face.
