Swirling mist enveloped the dark forest during the long night, all its creatures huddled fearing the beasts who roamed. It was the night of the Winter Solstice, a cause for celebration among predators, and hiding among prey. Running with the wind, a pack of wolves danced across the horizon.

In front a gray wolf led, pride running through his veins. Behind him raced a black wolf, thick and imposing. An almost blond wolf trotted behind him. A chestnut brown wolf came forward, charging up the lines. He frivolously dodged punishing nips and shook his head. Once fulfilled he sank back to his fourth position. The chubby peach wolf behind him rolled his eyes and growled dissaprovingly. The finale wolf, a muddy brown lowly thing, cowered while running at the sound of a growl.

As one the bachelors flew over the land, dodging trees and aimed with purpose. Each of the wolves had a place, fulfilling that place gave them something to live for, as she-wolves were usually far from their thoughts. With full stomachs they desperately wanted to get back to their den and just sleep.

As they neared their home, the gray wolf, Jade, slowed and sniffed around the entrance to the hollow that housed a huge dead oak, under which they slept. Nothing seemed to be amiss so he led his pack forward. His second in command, the black wolf Erek, also sniffed for any signs of danger, but on a night like this no animal would dare touch them. The rest of the carefree group filed in and went their own sleeping places.

On a bank of dirt to the left of the tree, Jade lay down flat, head on his paws, and only half relaxed. An alpha must always watch his subjects, and Jade was a tough ruler. In front of the tree, Erek lay down on his side and watched the others with little interest. The blondish wolf, Corone, plopped down to the left of Erek. Donny, the chestnut, gallantly lied down on the right. Onex came up a bit more slowly and hesitantly placed him self far from the others. And lowly Weston groveled in front of Jade before nervously lying a ways away from him. With everyone knowing their order, things went smoothly. The joyous crew settled in for the night, and slept peacefully.
