The first thing that you must do in a Zombie Apocalypse is set up a base of operations. This is a key. One mistake that is often made is when survivors travel aimlessly. The only time you should travel is if you have a set location that is important to reach, or if you run out of provisions. But I’ll get to that later.

A base of operations is the location where you will either:

A - Hole up for any length of time

B - Wait out the apocalypse

C - Wait for rescue

Many people will set up a base in their own homes, though this is not a good location to stay. There are many different qualifications of a good base, and I will list them here.

Setting Up a Base

There are a few simple steps to setting up a good base of operations.

1.      Find a location that is in a small city or a well-stocked town.

You don’t want to set up in a large city with an immense population under any circumstances. A city of between 4 and 15,000 inhabitants is ideal. Finding a place with a population that is manageable, but not nonexistent makes zombie and provision management easier.

2.      Find a large building with easy access to provisions.

Make sure your chosen location either possesses, or has easy access to, weapons and food. DO NOT hole up in a mall. There are stores available that hold easy access to weapons and food but do not exceed the space of one store. Malls are too big to manage all entrances and exits and keep zombies at bay.

3.      Make sure to limit the amount of entrances, exits, and windows.

When choosing a base, keep in mind the amount of entrances and exits, and try and keep the amount of windows to a minimum. More entrances means more chances of break-ins. Too many windows means an easier security breach. Infected will probably be able to eventually smash through glass and boards will only hold them off for so long. An ideal location as one or two entrances and exits, as well as a door or two in the back for supply trucks, and no windows. My personal base has been scoped out and has these qualities. It makes your base much safer.

4.      Keep a backup.

It’s important that you keep a backup base in mind. In case of an emergency, make sure it is accessible and fortified to the above qualifications.
