When the unexpected occurs

Chapter 1

Chapter 1- The Beginning

Winters POV

"The torture has finally ceased!"

I snap my head up from the table with a rush. I hadn't gotten much sleep last night and ended up drifting off during my last class of the day, Chemistry. Normally I would never do such a thing, considering I'm a star student, but I had stayed up really late last night babysitting.

"Oh my lord," I groaned while putting my head back on my desk "I'm so tired." My best friend, Brooklyn, stared at me with a blank look on her face. "I can leave you here if you want."

I knew she wasn't kidding, so I slowly got up from my desk and walked to our lockers.

"What are your plans after school, Winter?"

"I have to watch Braden tonight."

"Isn't that the fourth night this week?"

I simply nodded. I was used to it, my mom always came home late, or not at all. During these times I had to watch over my 7 year old brother.

"But it's Thursday! I wanted to do something fun, like a party." She pouted. She's always trying to get me to go to parties, but they're not really my type of thing. The loud music, grinding, alcohol and drugs never really appealed to me.

"Why on a Thursday that doesn't even make sense" I asked

"To celebrate the almost-end of the week?" she tried.

"No"

Brooklyn gave me the puppy eyes and started begging me to go to a party, "Please Winter?We never go to any parties and I heard there's a big one at Riley's house tomorrow. Everyone's saying that it's going to be epic!"

After about ten minutes of her constant begging, I finally gave in. "Fine" I grumble, annoyed. "I'll go to the stupid party tomorrow, but I still have to watch Braden tonight."

She started squealing in joy as we walked to her car. "I'll come over to yours at 7 and we can start getting ready then, okay?" "Sure, whatever" I responded grumpily, with a roll of my eyes.

We finally got in her car and started the journey to my house.

"Braden please just take the medicine, I'm begging you" I cried while chasing Braden around the house.

The situation would probably seem comical to anyone but me at the moment. But considering the fact that it's 9 o'clock at night and I just want to sleep, it's not very funny. Continuing chasing Braden, trying to persuade him to take the medicine, he finally stopped.

"Fine, but only if I get to stay up late tonight to watch cartoons" he said, stopping the chase.

"Sure, whatever. Just take the medicine"

The front door suddenly slammed open and a bunch of moans were heard.

"Oh yea baby, don't stop"

I carried Braden up to his room and told him not to move, then rushed back downstairs. I seemed to startle the couple as they both looked at me with shocked faces. My mothers face suddenly turned to anger and she started yelling at me to go away. She was obviously drunk, so I decided not to fight with her for the night and let her continue with her conquest.

Now let me explain, my father left when I was 12 years old and Braden was 3. He just walked out of the house one day and never returned. My mother took it pretty hard and hasn't been the same since. She usually comes home really late or not at all, and never really acknowledges me or Braden. I try my best to take care of my little brother since I'm really all he has.

I walked up to Braden's room to put him to sleep and then went to my own room to finally rest.
