"WE can't afford to support your education, Dahyun-ie. Your aunt did not lend us some money since we hadn't paid our past debts to them.""Could you just say it direct to the point, eomma?"
"Studying in the city made us more broke, financially. The storm had ruined our farm, too. We have no other option but to make you stop from studying."
"No, eomma. I can't, I mean, I'm a scholar in our university. Also, there's only two years remaining for me to finish my studies. And the fact that we are not even paying a cent here---"
"But the dorm is very expensive."
"But I can manage. I can just get some part-time job and earn money myself. My schedule is pretty convenient this year, and I can work from afternoon up to midnight, eomma."
"But it would just tire the hell out of you. You will not be able to focus on your studies if that happened."
"Eomma, I'm already 21 and I'm old enough to manage all these. In fact, I tried working during my first year in college, and I did well back then. So, don't worry, eomma, I can do it again."
"Hmm. *sniffs* You shouldn't be working while studying. If your father is still alive. He won't let this happen to us. *sobs*"
"Uljimasaeyo (Don't cry), eomma. We can make it. We can survive this. Anyways, don't worry about me. Don't pressure yourself on earning money to give me, 'cause I can work for myself. Remember, you've raised a tough girl, so don't worry, I'll be fine."
"I'm sorry, Dahyun-ah."
"Don't feel sorry, eomma..."
"DUBU?! Long time no seeeeeee!"
A loud shriek snapped Dahyun back to reality. She raised her head after hearing one of her bestfriendsㅡChaeyoung, called her name. Excitement filled both of their faces and it was evident on their ear-to-ear smiles and their eyes that were shaped into narrow crescent slits.
"Ya! Long time no see, my friend!" Dahyun exclaimed happily as she ran towards her bestfriend who was standing in the middle of their university's corridor. Their shrieks were too loud and it made few of the students shifted their attention to them.
The girls locked each other's body into a warm embrace of excitement and jumped happily while chuckling together. They are already on their third year in college, but their actions and heights didn't match their age. They longed for each other's warmth as they hadn't met personally during their long school break. All of them had different agendas during their school break, some went abroad, some went somewhere far, and some just stayed at home.
"How's your vacation?" Dahyun asked and smiled happily to her friend when they finally broke the hug, but they made sure that they're still holding each other's hands.
Chaeyoung smiled widely and summarized what happened to their vacation in Japan. Dahyun felt jealous of her friend's experience for a bit, but she abruptly shook that kind of thought in her head and maintained a genuine smile on her face instead.
"How 'bout you, Dubs? How's the break?" Chaeyoung asked happily.
"Hmm. Just...fine," Dahyun answered and diverted her gazes on the ground. Sadness was evident on her tone and that made Chaeyoung grew worried for her.
