I woke up to a loud explosion. The first bomb that fell. It was a few miles away but i felt the room shake like it was just outside. I knew immediately that i had to get myself to the vault i signed up for and got accepted into. The war has been going on for a while now, but only now have they started to bomb us.

I lived alone so i didn't have anyone to wake up or comfort. I got in my car and drove towards the vault. I turned the radio on and even on the music station they were giving reports and warnings to get to the nearest vault or stay indoors. Like staying in a house would prevent nuclear radiation to get it. I roll my eyes at the thought.

I hit a heavy traffic. I got out of my car and got on the bike i put in the trunk yesterday to go to a park and exercise. Little did i know how much that would be of use to my life. I was going full speed up the street and i finally made it. The vault. It didn't look like much at first so i second guessed myself. But when people in heavy armor were screaming, telling us to get inside after showing verification of our acceptance into the vault i knew i was in the right place.

I had the letter in my hand ready to give to them. There was an eerie whistle from a distance. The second bomb. It was closer this time. Louder. I quickly showed them the letter. They looked at it for a few seconds before letting me through. Only a few people were in there before me. A lot of people were piling in after thought. I lived close, which was an advantage. An hour passed and they shut the doors. We were filed into a large room. There were only 100 of us. I expected more considering the population of the city.

They explained what was happening outside and that we were chosen to be frozen cryogenically or something. I didn't think our technology had improved this much already. I guess i was behind the times. We were filed into rooms in groups of 5 with a government official per group. They explained that we were set to be frozen for 500 years and that this was enough time for civilization to improve after the nuclear aftermath.

I just sat through thinking of my family in another city. How were they doing? Are they worried about me? I shook the thoughts out. They kicked me out. Why would they care now? I agreed to everything in the papers to sign up so i didn't speak up about anything. They put each of us in a pod to be frozen. They set the time in years. 500 for the first. 500 for the second. I was third. I heard three beeps of the keyboard and the door was closed and i felt myself fade out.
