Chapter Twenty Five.
Naomi P.O.V
"Come, in." Marylin says, stepping aside. I give Leroy a hesitant look before walking past the woman. Strong scents of cigarettes and liquor hit my nose, causing me to pause. I take a deep breath, forcing myself to ignore the putrid smell. It smelled just like my father did. He never stopped drinking, or smoking. I was used to very small scent of cigarettes when I'd come over to Marylin's, but this..this was different. The smells were stronger than they'd ever been.
I feel a light poke on my back and I flinch, turning around. Leroy looked at me with concern in his eyes. "I'm okay." I say, turning on my heel and continuing to the living room. I take a seat on the small love-seat against the wall and cross my legs. Leroy quickly takes his spot next to me, giving me another concerned look. I give him a small reassuring smile, before turning my attention back to Marylin.
She sits on the couch across from us, biting her lips and folding her arms. Her hair was messier than usual, but I'd suspected that that was because she'd just woken up. But her eyes showed lack of sleep.
"I'm fine." She says, taking a deep breath.
"Mom." Leroy says, his voice pleading. He and I both knew that something was wrong. She'd refused to answer his calls, texts, messages. We didn't come up here for her to lie and tell us everything was fine. Her appearance and lack of smiles told us different.
She shakes her head and lifts up a small hand to silent him. Something I'd never seen her do before. "I'm fine, baby. Please. Just go back home and enjoy your time with Naomi. I really just need some space. I promise, I'm fine." She repeats, her eyes glistening with tears.
I hated seeing her like this. I spoke up.
"Marylin, please. If something is wrong, you need to tell us. If you're in danger, you need to speak up for the protection of you and your baby."
She brushes strand of hair from her flushed face, leaning against the sofa. She smiles and shakes her head once more. She places a hand on her belly and smiles wider.
"I'm okay. We're okay."
"You're not okay. We can both see that!" Leroy says.
She closes her eyes and brings her other hand to her temple. She swallows and winces as she does so.
Removing a hand from her face, she wipes a tear from her eye.
"Your father and I have been arguing a lot. He left a few nights ago and I miss him dearly. I just want him back, that's all. Please don't worry about me." She says finally.
Leroy swallows, shaking his head. "I'm sorry mom. I'm sure he will come to his senses." Is all he says.
A tear slides down her cheek, causing Leroy to rise from his spot and pull her into a tight embrace. I smile lightly at his sweetness. He would always be there for his mom no matter what, not a lot of guys like him out there. He kisses her forehead and sits next to her.
A few more tears escape from her eyes as he hugs her more tightly.
More. It had to be something more. Darren had left plenty of times, and she was never this upset. She'd usually keep herself busy with cooking or reading.
She'd always say, 'He'll be back, I ain't even worried.' and finish her cooking. I hadn't known Marylin for an extremely long time, I didn't have to. I could tell by her actions that it was something more bothering her, she just wouldn't speak up.
Fear bit my chest and I close my eyes. If it was something extremely bad, it could definitely end in disaster. None of us needed another disaster. She needed to speak up. But would pushing her really make things better?
