Silence descended over the mass of students and teachers as they waited for a full minute, expecting the fire to spark to life again, or someone to come forward and admit they tampered with the flame.
Nothing of the sort occurred.
It wasn’t until two minutes had passed that whispers and conversations erupted in the crowd, Elanna pulling Takeda to the side to briefly speak with him. Sora, meanwhile, stood frozen in place, hand still halfway between the bird bath and her. Tears freely gathered in her eyes, facing no resistance from the trembling girl.
“A-Arreba…” Sister She mumbled, voice shaky and low, “Kyd lyrto.” You lied.
Konan was faring no better, the elder sister nervously fidgeting her hands as she was forced to simply watch her sister, unable to help. If she were to run forward it would only end worse. The last thing she needed was for one of the Mayami sisters to break one of the school rules right now.
After what seemed like hours Elanna and Takeda stepped forward again, Elanna wearing a sympathetic yet content smile.
Takeda cleared his throat, gathering the attention of students as he smiled gently to Sora. “Mayami, Sora.” He resumed the ceremony as if nothing happened while Elanna once again lit the fire with her blood. “Faction 0, descendant of the unknown. Class A, pureblood.” His words only ignited a multitude of conversations among Sora’s peers, earning a whimper from the girl.
One of the men next to Takeda handed the girl bandages for the wound the blade had left, though the girl shook her head, lifting her hand to reveal that it was perfectly healed, not even a scar remaining.
It was an obvious fact that the descendants healed faster than humans and were often considered immortal for this, but no one should have healed as quickly as the Faction 0 girl did.
Takeda huffed and turned back to the crowd, only to feel Sora poke him in the back lightly. The man turned to scold her for not moving on, before she spoke and his eyes widened in realization.
“No miin hal pein frn daar noul.” I do not know where to go.
While struggling for an answer Takeda’s gaze fell on Konan who was currently scratching her nails down the chair next to her leg. “Noul brys sento daar hait arreba.” Go sit next to your older sister.
Sora nodded and allowed herself to bestow a genuine smile to the man before her. “Anieo, Takeda-So.” Thank you, Mr. Takeda.
The mentor could only stare after the child with wide eyes as she strolled away, a smile present on her features and even reaching her blood red eyes.
“Konan!” She cried happily, drawing the attention of surrounding students once again. “No tainu a faction!” I have a faction. With a chuckle the elder sister allowed the girl to sit next to her, the younger turning her body away from the ceremony once again to speak with her sister.
“At first no ze worried, kin hai ny right!” At first I was worried, but you were right! The snowy haired girl scoffed, “Kunnai shock…” What a shock…
Konan couldn’t bring herself to be angry with the girl who unknowingly shifted between languages as she spoke, not that she tried very hard.
“I’m proud of you, Arreda.” Little sister. She smiled, ruffling the white curls and laughing as Sora swatted her hands away with a pitiful glare.
“Don’t touch the hair, Konan.” She playfully scolded her elder sister, turning away and once again regarding the ceremony, noticing there was only one more student in the section where the unsorted students sat.
