Chapter One:

Crab Grass and Li

The hot summer breeze drifted through my blonde hair. My legs were crossed behind me as I lay in the grass. I was sketching a sunset. The Alabama sunset to be exact. I heard a rumble behind me. A steam engine. I turned my head to look down the hill when a shoe hit my face. I was confused. A shoe? I looked up at the big oak that towered over me. A boy a about my age sat on one of the twisted branches looking down at me. How did he get up there? No one could climb this tree except me. I was what you would call a "tomboy". Most boys would take one glance and cower away. Not me. When I was all of four I scaled it no problem. My pappy had called me his little tiger ever since. I realized we had just been staring at each other intently.

"Did I hurt you?" He asked. I could hear his heavy southern drawl.

"Nope, but I think it left a mark." I chuckled and touched the place where it had hit me.

"There is a slight bruise, but some ice will cure it." He said smiling.

Who are you anyways?"I asked.

"The names Liam, but you can call me Li." He said. Li? That's a weird nickname...I further investigated his features. He had brown hair, chestnut eyes and a toned body that was slung casually on the branch. He had a strong jawline and a stern look about him. His clothes were torn jeans and a plaid shirt. And he was missing a shoe. I had decided he was good looking.

"I'm Abby. Short for Abigail." I almost spat the last part out and I shuddered. I hated that name. I was determined to change it.

He chuckled. I crossed my arms in defense.

"I like it. No need to get hasty." He said smiling.

I sighed.

Do you want your shoe back?"I asked. He smiled and slung his body off the brach and skillfully dropped to the ground. I shuddered again. He saw me.

"What? Did I do it wrong?" He teased. I shook my head and looked away. I remembered that day. But I pushed those thoughts away. He walked over and I handed over his shoe. He took it gratefully and bent down. I took those few seconds to wipe away the tear that had slipped out. I quickly recovered when he stood back up to full height.

"You okay?" He said looking me straight in the eyes.

"Um..ya..I'm perfect." I said with a wobbly tone that didn't seem the least bit convincing.

"Hmmmm. Right." He said with a lop sided grin.

I sighed. He walked behind the tree and pulled out the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in my whole life. A hand crafted gutair. I gasped and gaped at it. I had always wanted one ever since I was little. He noticed my expression and handed it to me. I gazed at it with pure bliss. I stroked its strings and the beautiful wood.

He chuckled.

"You like it? I made it myself." He said. I nodded. Then out it onto my knee and sang as I had imagined it.

Your hand fits in mine like it's made just for me. But bare this in mind it was, ment to be.....etc." I sang the whole thing while playing the gutair. When I had finished, I looked up and looked at Li. He was staring at me like I was a ghost.

"What?" I asked him after a few seconds. He just was speechless.

"You...I...the gutair...how do you know how to play it?" He asked.

"My dad taught me the strings when I was 8 and I guess it stuck." I was really surprised myself. I didn't know I could play that good.

"I can sing too, but I haven't done it for a while." He looked away.

That's okay. I sing tons but without any instrument accompaniment." I said. He nodded. I looked at the sunset that was fading fast.

"I have to go, Li." I said. He nodded again.

"I guess I'll see you around." He said.

"Ya." I handed him the gutair and started home. But a hand grabbed mine.

"Come back tommarow." He said. I smiled and nodded.

"Bi, Li." I said.

"Bi, Abby." I loved the way he said my name and I almost died with the deep musky tone he said it in.

I turned away and hugged my sketchbook to my chest. I think I have a crush on someone I just met.
