Chapter Six
A week was all I had with my son. He was smart enough to know that too, thus he wouldn’t let me out of his sight for even a millisecond. “Momma…” I looked up from the laptop to see Peyson standing in the doorway with the rabbit I passed down to him. “Can I sleep in your room?” With a sweet voice like his how could I ever say no to him. “Of course you can sweetie.” I patted the large space next to me and let him slide in. Not having Peyson next to I was probably the thing I missed most and dreaded. I turned off the computer, changed the channel to something other than Adult Swim. Within minutes he was knocked out, snoring like a Pug. I watched him sleep, until my phone started ringing. “Hello?” I said it in a hushed voice as I tip-toed out of the room. “Hey…” Braxton. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have told you everything that I went through. It was probably too much for you to handle. “No. It wasn’t too much. I’m glad that you told me. I’m glad that you told me the truth. I don’t care about your past, I just want to focus on your present and future…which I hope can include me.” “It can…but there’s someone else in my heart.” “Who?” “Can I send you a picture?” “Of course.” I could tell that he was curious, so I decided to send the picture of Peyson smearing ice cream on my face and laughing. “Did you get it?” “Yeah. He’s adorable. I hope I can meet him soon.” “I don’t know. Depends on how long we can make this work.” “It’ll work.” “I’ll just have to handle some past demons.”
Braxton's POV
After talking to Rachel I decided that it was time I handle some of my past demons too, my ex-fiancée. Before I met Rachel I was engaged to someone else, someone horrible. All she and her family wanted was status and money. My family didn’t know what to do about it, since our family’s had been indebted to one another for hundreds of years. To get ‘clingy’ off of me, we said that she should leave me be. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder you know?” She fell for it with ease, packed up her skiing gear and left for Scandinavia. Have I tricked Rachel into falling for me? Maybe, but if it is true, then it was because I loved her back. Heck, I loved her before I met her.
Before calling up Amber, clingy, I talked to my mom. “What should I do?” “Get straight to the point but don’t tell her about Rachel and the baby. If she finds out she’ll leak it to the newspapers or use it as blackmail. Last time when you and Rachel were at the café the CEOs almost threw a fit, including Amber’s father. All I’m saying is that you need to be careful of your words.” “Okay.” I left my mom and strolled outside to the deck. “Babe!” “Ugh, hey Amber.” “What’s wrong?” “Hmm, how do I put this…?” “Are you breaking up with me?!” “Yes! That’s exactly what I was going to say. I’m so glad you feel the same way. Maybe we can chat over tea some time. Bye.” Just before I hung I heard the voice of someone else. “Braxton. I know you’re still there.” It was her father, the second main CEO at my family’s company next to my father, him being the first. “Yes sir.” “You’re not breaking off the engagement with my daughter now are you?” “Sir…” “If I find out that you are I’ll be taking over you family’s company. “ “How?” “Try me.” “I’m breaking up with her, that’s that.” “Fine…If I were you I’d hire some security for that castle of yours.” He hung up, leaving me confused and with a dial tone that spelled conspiracy.
