Prologue

My father and mother, Tobias and Tris have told my brother and I so much about their old lives. They have told us about the system, the 'factions', and how they were supposed to be separated into different groups. They had both started in abnigation, the selfless faction, but turned to dauntless, the brave faction.

My brother, Dom, would be in the abnigation faction. He's so kind an caring, like my mother. I take after my father. I'm dauntless. Making me a good fighter, along with the rashness of a warrior. My mom has always said that I have no filters, nothing between my heart and my actions, because that's where all of my actions come from. I don't think, I do.

They say that there is still a small-scale war going on in Chicago. But we live here, a tiny town outside of the amity walls. (Amity is the faction of peace). I love it here, there is plenty of space to fight, train, and mess around. Plus, there are a lot of things to climb, and I don't mean trees. I mean canyons. The landscapes here have smaller trees and giant cliffs, with lots of foot holds, they're also great for jumping.

I had found an old tower down at the bottom of a canyon on day when I was extra-bored. That was my new place. Sometimes I'd disappear there for days at a time. My mom always got scared, but dad new I could fight for myself and that I would be fine, and I will be. Maybe.

Well, it's all about the risk.
