T H E T R O P E
Welcome back to #ProjectInnovation High, where our main character has met her new love interest. She hasn't immediately taken a liking to him. In fact, in some cases, he's even a little obnoxious. But, at some point, she catches herself thinking something along the lines of how cute he is, and then quickly follows up with "wtf why did I just say that?"

1. The reader is already well aware that the MC will probably become interested in the love interest. As soon as the MC catches the first note of attraction, the reader is already there, and knows exactly what it means. "Why did I think that?" isn't throwing anybody off the scent.
2. How many people actually think that? If you think someone is cute, you know why you did. Because you think they're attractive. Noticing an attraction to someone isn't often "why the heck did I like that" and more of an "oh no."

At the first notice of attraction, the main character can easily decide to fight it. To be uncomfortable with it. To decide that it doesn't mean anything that she thinks the love interest is attractive, because she's allowed to find people physically attractive without meaning anything. There are still ways to add mystery and build up to the spot where the shoe finally drops without the "why did I think that?" moment that we're all so familiar with. We all know why you thought that.
