All I wanted was a relaxing night out with friends, where we could just simply catch up after a long week of work. Of course, luck just loves to play against me almost all the time, and this request was no exception at all. And it all started with a single name.
“Y/N.” I heard my friend, Saloni, call out, as I focused on my partially melted chocolate chip ice cream. “So, any luck with finding some cute guys at your work?”
“Oh God, here we go again.” I sighed, rolling my eyes at the same ludicrous topic we have every time we go out. “No. I haven’t, and I honestly don’t care. Why can’t you just drop it?”
“Because, you need to find someone in your life that can make you happy, and not so antsy when we all go out.” She gestured to the other friends sitting across the table. I saw each of them sitting in pairs, hands wrapped in another’s hands, while I sat all alone on one side.
I shrugged off the observation as I spoke out, “I don’t get why you’re making such a big deal out of this. Maybe I’d stop being ansty, if all of you could just stop talking as if you’re on a date, and start talking as if you were just with your best friends.”
Of course we all knew that wasn’t gonna happen. My best friends were all dating each other. It was hard to remember that they were supposed to be best friends when they’re constantly together, talking about future plans, weddings, babies, and moving in.
“And maybe you’d stop being a bitch to us if you weren’t so picky and dated like every other normal twenty year old.” my other friend, Jyoti, spat out.
“What Jyoti’s trying to say is –”
“No it’s cool I get it. If you’ll excuse Im going to take a walk and get some fresh air, so suck each other’s faces all you like. I’ll be gone for awhile.” I got up from my seat, and headed to the nightly lit walkway that lead to the exit and eventually to Mumbai’s noise filled streets, glimmering lights and buildings.
As I continued my solitary stroll, I decided to take a detour and head to the nearby park. . As I reached the end, I held on to the fence before entering the park . It seemed that all the couples in Mumbai were there. Hands intertwined, heads on each other's shoulder. The more I stood there marveling at them, the more I realized how jealous and upset I was.
“It’s amazing isn’t it?” I heard an familiar, yet unfamiliar deep voice from behind.
“It is. Love…it must be a nice thing to have.” I sighed sadly, turning around to face the figure, but on this dark night with dim lights, it was difficult to make out who the person was. All I could see was a tall, lean, but built man standing next to me.
“Im guessing you’re single then?” he chuckled.
“And Im guessing you have someone you call special just like everyone else in this lovesick world.” I glared at him, realizing that I was talking to a stranger not an annoying best friend. “Sorry, I just…I know I probably don’t have a right to say anything about you or –
“No, I get it, you think everyone falls in love for the sake of it. You’re not into the whole dating thing, are you?”
I sighed looking down in response to his question ”Of course, Im into it, but Im just constantly waiting for the right guy. But maybe, waiting isn’t good enough.”
Though I couldn’t see his face entirely, I saw his mouth curve into a smile. I caught my breath at the sight, and I wasn’t entirely sure why, but it felt nice. “No waiting isn’t good enough, sometimes you just have to go for it.” he responded.
“But the heartbreak, constantly hopping from one person to the next just to get over another, the control…I’ve heard and seen this so many times through my friends. I don’t want to become broken like them.”
“That’s the beauty of it. Love is just like life. You make mistakes, you learn from them, and then you try again when you’re ready. The bad things shouldn’t be holding you back, sometimes it’s the good things that need to keep you going.” he smiled even more as he looked into my eyes through the dark.
“So why aren’t you with the love of your life right now then?” I asked.
“Well, I don’t have one. Cricket’s been pretty much the love of my life, but I don’t know maybe that’ll change. I just know that if I met a girl whose as pretty as you, I’d definitely do anything to make something special last for a lifetime.”
“Cricket ? Wait –” My voice was interrupted by a horn from a car that passed and it’s light shone across our faces for a brief second or two. It took me a moment to process the face, I had just recognized. The perfectly styled hair, the perfect white smile, those warm brown eyes.“Hardik?” I breathed out.
He looked away for a brief moment, as he scratched the back of his head. “In the flesh, and you are?”
“Y/N?! WHERE ARE YOU?!” Saloni’s scream rippled through the silence. I sighed deeply.
“I guess that answers your question, and that’s my cue to leave.” I said letting go of the fence, reluctantly. Hardik’s smile dropped, realizing that our time was up.
“You know, you never answered my question.” he yelled out. I looked back at him confused. Surely, he had heard my name from Saloni. Anyone from across the country could have heard it. “Maybe I didn’t make it clear ten minutes ago, but me meeting that perfect girl and treating her special…That was my way of asking you out sometime.”
I turned around, hiding the smile that was forming, biting my lower lip. Looking back, I simply walked to him, handing my number and an answer “Yes.”
His frown from earlier before, had turned into the biggest smile, making me smile in return. I walked backed to my friends, replaying the events in my head. For once I was happy, I wasn’t the antsy bitch that everyone was complaining about.
“I see you took our advice. Who was he? He was cute!” Saloni replied joyously. I didn’t answer at first, still smiling.
“A stranger. A complete, wonderful, and talented stranger.” In that moment, I knew. He wasn’t just a stranger, a hopeless romantic, or a famous cricketer . Hardik Pandya, wasn’t just anyone I found on the streets. He was the right guy.
“Really? He looked familiar. Childhood friend maybe. I’d like to meet him! Oh well.” she said shaking her head as she walked ahead of me.
