"Today, boys and girls, you are going to be participating together in an activity, which I know isn't something that happens often, but I think it's good for an old-fashioned rivalry every once in a while." The coach excitedly explains, clearly serious about her job.The girls stand on one side of the court while the boys stand on the other. Both sides stare each other down, prepared to take the other down in any activity the coach assigns us.
"What are we playing today, coach?" A male voice asks.
The coach chuckles. "Eager beavers huh?" Suddenly, she whips a basketball from behind her back. I internally cheer- I have been playing basketball since I was a wee tot and used to be a starter at my old school, so I won't have to worry about humiliating myself in front of anyone today.
"Basketball. Now, obviously, girls will be one team and boys will be the other. As for positions, I will assign them as well as assign a team captain. The team captain is in charge of the team's plays." She then promptly begins going down the lines assigning positions. First, she finishes the boy's side. Once she reaches the girls, she points to me. A flash of realization crosses her features.
"You. You are new aren't you?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Name, kid?"
"I'm Mei Lee Chung."
"You familiar with basketball, Mei Lee?"
"I was a starter at my last school." I state matter of factly. No reason to sound like I am full of myself. Not a good look.
"Hm, alright then, kid. Show us what you got. You will be the girls' team captain and point guard." She quickly moves on to the next, not even waiting for my reaction. I smile to myself, ready to take this opportunity to prove myself.
Mina runs over to me. "Nice job, Mei. Everyone looked impressed. Can't wait to see your mad ball skills." She laughs and playfully nudges me. "I'm interested to see you up against Jimin. He's one of our star basketball players. But, don't worry. I bet you could take him!"
I stare at her blankly for a second, trying to process her words."Did you just say...Jimin? As in, smol big-headed baby-handed pink-haired Jimin?"
She snorts. "Well, sheesh. I wouldn't have put it exactly like that, but uh...yeah, that Jimin. He's the boys' team captain and point guard, of course."
I groan. "Nonononononononono. This is not what I needed right now. Why, oh why, Neptune, won't you just strike me with lightning now and let me perish?" I dramatically jump up and down, banging the palms of my hands against my temples.
Mina backs away from me slightly, concerned. "Uh, you all right, Mei?"
I snap out of my tantrum and hastily smile at Mina. "All is Gucci, b. Just, uh, I don't know, get your head in the game."
Mina's eyes light up and she smirks at me. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
I realize what she is getting at instantly and grin. "Abso-frickin-lutely!"
We both immediately start singing "Getcha Head in the Game" from High School Musical. Once we finish our musical number, we start giggling profusely. By the time we realize every is staring at us, bewildered and dumbfounded, it's far too late to compose ourselves. Our cheeks turn red and we make awkward eye contact with everyone, sheepishly smiling.
Thank Neptune the coach blew her whistle at that moment to rally us up.
"Alright teams- team captains where you at?"
Me and Jimin both step forward, finally making eye contact. The atmosphere instantly grew more intense and I shifted slightly on my feet, itching to get my hands on a basketball already.
"Shake hands, acquaint yourselves, you know the drill."
We both hesitantly creep towards each other and clumsily shake hands, keeping the acquaintanceship brief.
Before I can let go and turn around to retreat back to my spot, Jimin grips my hand firmer. "Do your best, lil worm. Either way, I am going to squish you." He mutters under his breath, loud enough for only me to hear. All the while, he maintains a fake friendly facade and plasters a cheesy smile on his dopy face.
"Jokes on you. I'm a hawk disguised as a worm." I fire back, smoothly releasing my grip from his and gliding back to my spot beside Mina. I look at her and grin. "Ready to getcha head in the game?"
"Is Troy Bolton fine as hecc?" She asks mischievously.
"Uh, duh."
"Then, you bet your sweet bippy I am!" She bumps her hip against mine and we laugh.

He had been giving me a run for my money the entire game. Since the minute my foot has stepped onto the court, I haven't had a real chance to catch my breathe.
At this very moment, I have the ball and I am driving it down the court. My only goal right now is to score the three-pointer that we need to win the game.
I pass the ball to Mina and run ahead, bypassing Jimin. Just as I run up to catch the ball that Mina has tossed back to me, a figure zooms by and poof, the ball is gone.
Jimin is now driving the ball back down to their end of the court. In panic mode, my legs burst forward at a speed they have never reached before. By the time I reach Jimin and lunge to snatch the ball, he tosses it to his teammate who is tall enough to easily toss it into the basket as if it was laundry day on a Sunday.
The clock chimes, indicating that the game is over and the boys have indeed won. I slump in defeat, feeling embarrassed to have let the girls down. Looks like Jimin won this time around. Jimin 1, Mei 0.
