"They're serving pudding in the cafe today" Hayley, a quiet girl with long black hair whispered to the blonde guy walking next to her, otherwise known as Oliver. "Then we should avoid it" The guy whispered back and the girl deflated. They walked through the silent halls of the high school, books clutched against them, trying to beat the crowds. The bell rang, alerting the two that class was out. They looked at each other, already panicking. "We really have to get out of the hall"

"What's happening with the party at your house Liz?" A girl with strawberry pigtails wearing a cheerleading outfit was quickly swarmed by kids in similar uniforms and jerseys. She nodded, smiling and leading them down the hall.

"Watch out for the football players" Hayley whispered and dodged the group. Oliver attempted to follow her but tripped on the foot of one of the football players. "Hey! Watch it!" The muscley guy snapped at Oliver, who scrambled to find his other book. "Oh look! It's the problem kids" Another football player jeered and pointed to Hayley, who was pulling Oliver up. A blonde cheerleader grabbed the book from Oliver and passed it on to the largest player, Odin. "You're in High School, so why are you reading a book meant for 4th graders" He threw the book back on the ground. A girl who stood by her locker leaned down to pick up the book "Touch it and I'll make sure you become as much of an outcast as these freaks" She backed away quickly "Anyone else wanna help?" Odin shouted and all the students averted their eyes.

"Here" Oliver looked up to see a hand being offered. He took it cautiously and allowed himself to be pulled up. "I think you dropped this" His book was being handed to him by a girl. She smiled as he took it "Hey punk didn't you hear me" Odin grabbed her shoulder and spun her around "I would appreciate it if you would not do that." Her sentence was broken and slow. The girl turned back to Oliver, grabbed his arm, and started leading him to the closest empty classroom. "Wait!" Oliver tried to tell her but she didn't listen.

Once in the room, the girl turned to face them. "Who are you?" Oliver asked "Evangeline" She held out a hand "Why did you do that? Don't you know that you will be an outcast like us?" Oliver turned to look at Hayley while he was talking "I don't know what you're saying" Evangeline motioned to her ears and shook her head before continuing "and I know what it feels like to be cast out by everyone. When I started at public school I was ignored, when I tripped everyone laughed, and people called me things" Evangeline grimaced, then she smiled and shrugged "but in the silence, I only hear the voices of the people who give me a reason to care"
