Max Caulfield was never into the glorious titles bestowed upon her by her blue-haired friend. Chloe Price is gone, and even Wonder-Max couldn't change that. Not so "Wonder" now, right? It's been 3 years since Chloe's final goodbye, and Arcadia Bay is safe, but empty without her. Max walked into the Two-Whales diner only to be greeted by the pale-faced Joyce Price. Her soft southern accent rang cheerfully when Max entered the diner.
"Max Caulfield, my how nice it is to see your face." Joyce gave Max a warm motherly hug, of which Chloe used to constantly reject.
"It's nice to see you too, Joyce." Max smiled and returned the hug and peered into her tired eyes.
"How's David?"
"Well, he's about as stubborn as he's always been but that aside, he's doing well." She nodded toward an empty booth.
"Why don't you go take a seat and figure out what you want to eat- this ones on me." Max smiled brightly. Joyce was always so gracious to Max, as if she was her own daughter. Max sat at the booth and looked over the menu.
'Only thing that's changed here are the prices..again'. She looked at the empty seat across from her and sighed in thought of Chloe.
"I know you miss her." Joyce's voice came abruptly interrupting Max's thoughts. She didn't even realize she was crying.
"So much, Joyce..." she whispered barely audible.
"It seems like just yesterday you two were little girls running around my kitchen making messes and playing pirates." She smiled softly but Max could see the pain in her eyes. It was the same pain that Max saw in herself in the mirror whenever she thought of the decision she had to make. She killed Chloe Price. Her best friend.
"Yeah. She always won our battles." Max smiled reminiscing on their stick battles in the backyard. Back when Chloe was innocent.
'Ugh...innocent..I hate that word..' Max thought to herself as she remembered Mark Jeffersons obsession with the idea, and how it almost destroyed her.
"Alright now, what do you want to eat darlin?" Joyce said trying to change the subject.
Max shook the less than unpleasant memories out of her head and smiled up at the older woman.
"I think I'm craving Joyce Price's famous Bacon and Eggs." It was Max's favorite.
"I thought you might say that- let me go ring it up for ya' dear." And with that, Joyce exited to the kitchen. Max's phone vibrated and she saw the name appear on her screen.Warren: Max!! What are you up to?
Max: Grabbing a bite to eat at Two-Whales. What's up?
Warren: I miss you. Let's have a movie night!
Max couldn't help but giggle. Warren loved his movies.Max: sure. Let me finish up here and get back with you. (:
"Joyce!!! Are you here?!" Suddenly a loud bang echoed through the diner as the voice of David Madsen stomped in.
"David, what in the Lord's name are you doing here? Why aren't you at Blackwell?" Joyce exclaimed as she exited the kitchen.
"It's Jefferson! That fucking bastard!" Max's eyes widened at the wicked name.
Joyce immediately notioned towards her.
"David...let's talk in private."
"No!" Max exclaimed. "What is it?! What about him? I want to know!"
David looked at her sympathetically. "She's gonna find out, Joyce."
He turned to Max.
"Max...they let him go. The Prescotts' bailed him out...and Nathan."
Max's heart sank.
'No...no no no this can't be happening...this has to be a mistake...not Jefferson...not the man who killed Kate and Rachel...and almost her..' Max's thoughts were running wild. 'And Nathan...Chloe...'
"NO!!" Max screamed and slammed her hands on the table, making everyone in the diner jump.
"David please..tell me this isn't happening...that's impossible..how..HOW CAN THEY GET AWAY WITH MURDER?!"
Joyce began to cry and went back into the kitchen, not wanting to be consoled by David. The diner was so silent you could hear a pin drop. It lasted for what seemed an eternity. David finally broke the silence.
"Max..." he began quietly, "Nathan had a lot of drugs..he is being moved to a psychiatric ward for rehabilitation. You know the courts are lienent with youth. And Jefferson...is let off on parol due to his fame with photography and his connections...the whole damn thing is fucked up.." he looked down. "I'm sorry Max...there's nothing more I can do. I can't bring Chloe back, and I can't arrest them if they stay out of trouble." Max felt dizzy. She stood up and ran out of the diner as fast as she could, not caring where she was going. She wasn't going to let this happen.
"Chloe...what should I do..?" She said aloud as she finally stopped at the junkyard. She collapsed at their secret spot and cried for what seemed like forever. "I CANT DO THIS ON MY OWN, CHLOE!!! I CANT LET THIS HAPPEN!" she screamed as loud as she could. Suddenly a butterfly flew into her eyesight and settled on an old journal.
"What...?" Max gasped as she realized it was the photo album Chloe had. It was filled with photos of them together, one of which Being them laying on the bed the day after David hit her. Then she understood.
"Maybe I can..." she stared, "no..no I can't. I can't bring Chloe back just to let her go again. I won't do it!" Max threw the album as far as she could and tucked her knees into her chest. With that, the butterfly flew away disappearing in the distance.'There has to be another way..'
