~Everly's POV

Okay, so maybe Darren isn't so bad... wait, stop thinking that! He's a smartass and a jerk. A hot jerk.... uggh! I need help. Oh, well. He apologized and I forgave him, I guess. He seemed like he meant his apology. But he was a completely different person compared to the night before. What changed in him? I was gonna find out.

That night before we had supper, after Darren's mom showed us around town and running errands with her and the evil Jess, we came back home when I caught Darren talking with my dad, brother, and his dad. He seemed like he was actually getting along with everybody. It seems like Chase though was a little annoyed, probably couldn't stand the fact that he wasn't a man yet and he was surrounded by them. He's so immature.

The girls and I exited Mrs. Mills's car and waved at them on the porch as we came toward them. Darren eyed me funnily, almost kinda like smirking at me, as I brought in grocery bags into their kitchen. That night after supper, which was surprisingly quiet again (not), I came out on the front porch and sat down where my dad sat earlier and just listened to my calm surroundings. Actually quite nice. But as nice as Darren seemed to get and Jess and Chase, still annoying as usual, there was still a part of me, wishing to be home, safe and sound. Knowing nothing will happen; just something in my gut that something bad was going to happen. Although, I got those a lot, my brain and gut were saying the same thing.

"Hey..." Darren says as I was looking out endlessly at their driveway, not seeing him.

"I wish you would stop doing that. I hate it when I get startled."

He chuckles and sits in a chair across from me, "Look," he starts, "I really am sorry for not only being mean in the beginning, but for, uh, last night."

I just look at him cautiously. "Do you actually mean that or did your dad just tell you to say that? To make us all get along?"

He frowns at me like he was controlling a temper about to rise, but controls it and says, "Look, I really am sorry, like I said earlier. It was wrong and I apologize for making the wrong impression. My mom and dad did not just say that to you, I chose to. Well, a little of both, but I really did feel bad."

"I forgive you," I say honestly. "It just scared me a lot."

He scoffs and says, "Well, you're a human living with people like me. What do you expect?"

I look at him again from where I was watching the end of the sunset and ask, "What?" confusingly. I was so confused. A human?

He suddenly realizes what he just said and acts like he needed to correct himself, "Well, you know what I meant. My family is crazy and we're all humans, trying to go through crazy, rough lives."

I get up and move to a chair closer to him. "Okay, uh, so I just wanted to say this," this time he looks at me as I truly say this, "I should apologize for saying what I said last night. I don't know anything about your past or whatever about you. I had no right to judge you that quickly."

This time he was confused, "What?" he whispers almost.

I whisper back, afraid something will start again, "The... abuse thing."

"Oh," he says nodding his head.

"So, I really am sorry on my behalf. Just glad I got it out and I forgave you and hopefully you can do the same for me."
