"Shit!", I yell as Chase starts to shake me awake. "Don't do that! God, Chase."
"We're here, doofus," I look out the window to see a tall house in the middle of a small field-like yard with forest surrounding it. "Wake up, sleeping beauty."
"Thanks for the warm wake up call," I say sarcastically.
My dad parks the car as I rub all the sleep goop out of my eyes and yawn loudly. I slightly rub Jess's leg and she looks at me sleepily. "Wake up, kiddo. We're here."
"Finally? Dad got us here in less than 20 years?" she says tiredly. Chase and I laugh as dad and mom look back at us from the front. "Kidding, jeez," she says climbing through our two seats as both car doors open.
We all climb out as dad comes around from the front to unload the trunk of endless piled suitcases. I was so tired. I wanted to shower, grab some oreos if they had any, and hit the hay while watching friends on netflix. I'm glad I'm here, but for now, I need to rest. Who knew endless car rides of doing nothing and not moving could be so tiring?
My train of thoughts suddenly came to an end as a lady about my mom's age with bright red hair came screaming outside and practically jumped into my mom's arms. She started screaming too and was surprisingly able to contain the woman's sudden impact onto her. Although, my mom was happy and that was all that mattered. I just smiled watching them.
I got distracted as Chase put my "bag of rocks" as he called it into my arms. "I'm not your butler," he says. Dad suddenly pulls us both close to him and says, "Behave you two," he says. And with those three words, Chase put on the fakest smile ever and just rolled his eyes at me. Teenagers. He didn't want to be here just as much as Jess and I. At least Jess and I would be able to find fun somewhere in what we did on this trip.
"And you must be Chase," the woman came up to my brother and hugged him as he did his best to with the suitcases in his hands. "And you must be Mrs. Mills," Chase says.
"Yes, yes. We've heard so much about you all. My husband, Matt, and I have known Amanda and Mark for ages. And you must be Jess." She holds her hand out, but Jess comes to hug her instead. Mrs. Mills laughs wholeheartedly as Jess lets go after a few seconds saying, "I was told to behave and be proper."
I rolled my eyes as Mrs. Mills took notice of me. "And you must be Everly."
"The runt of the litter," Chase says as he passes us to the house with Jess and mom. "Chase," mom says as he just shrugs.
"Oh, look, how you've grown. Last time I saw you was when you were going down a dozen slides at Chuck E Cheese's for your 6th birthday. Oh, you're so beautiful," she says as she hugs me tightly.
I laugh as she lets go. "Come, inside." She greets my dad and gives him a side hug as they go up the porch, showing us into their small mountain home. "Welcome, Mark," she says as we all walk inside.
"Nice place," Chase says. "Where's my room?"
"Watch it, young man. You just got here. Be nice to the guests you'll be living with for the next 2 months," my mother says sharply. Chase gives her an apologetic look as she just shakes her head.
"Second floor, 3rd door down on the right," Mrs. Mills says as she winks at him as he goes upstairs with a real smile to put his stuff down and relax. Let's see if I can do it without being rude.
