No Special Lighting Required

I wake up. It’s not morning, though.

Still dark. I get out of bed, though.

I trod over to the door, and smile.

On the back of my door is a mirror.

Angel Girl inside is perfect

Slight bed-head looks like angelic waves

Blemished skin looks absolutely clear.

Normally cherry red cheeks have only a pale blush.

Eyes are dark and shadowed, but look highlighted in the low light.

Body silhouetted so she looks more slender.

But Angel Girl in the mirror will vanish when the sun comes up…

She will be replaced with Ugly Girl;

Overweight, with a pimple-covered forehead,

Blood red cheeks, boring yellow hair,

pale gray-blue eyes framed in thick black glasses.

Angel Girl’s not exactly identical twin,

Her whole existence is a combination of other people’s opinions and the doubts:

“You’re too fat”

“Your hair is so boring- do something with it!!!”

“Your eyes are bland.”

“You’re ugly.”

But on the best days,

Neither are in the mirror.

And it’s just me.

Plain old me.

Someday, maybe Angel Girl will be me,

and everytime I look at my reflection

It’s Angel Girl.
