My friends and I were walking down the halls of the sports complexe to get to one of the locker rooms. And no, we're not uptight girly cheerleaders. In fact, we're far from that. We may be girls, but we've got pure brawn and beauty within oursleves. We play hockey, in our hometown of Calgary, Alberta. My friends and I all play Bantam level of hockey, even though 13-14 is bantam and 15-17 is midget, but we all wanted to stay together and play.,
We entered the locker room, Toria entering first since she was leading the way, then Danny, Sabrina, and then myself. I held the door open for some of the others who were behind us the entire time. Probbaly eaves dropping on our conversation as well. I didn't mind though, we talked about the most stupidest stuff that half the time didn't even make sense.
We all took a seat next to one another. We each had our own lockers, with our names taped to the top so no one took ours and so everyone knew where they stuff went. Our bags on the other hand slid under the bench right underneath our lockers. The lockers were all open, one shelf at the top to set your helmet, mouth guard, tape, and other junk any hockey player could possibly need. Our hockey sticks sat in the locker, along with our jerseys. Though, every time we left the locker room, we brought every single item that belonged to us with us. Nothing was left behind.
We may only be fourteen and fifteen years old, but we're pretty good hockey players. And not just good, but also quite appealing to most people. We all started getting dressed into our gear. But since we're only four girls on the hockey team, and the rest are boys, we always wear our long sleeve shirts and black leggins or black form fitting pants to practices and games. Today we had a practice and then on Wednesday we'd have a game against another team from around town.
I was pulling up my hockey socks after getting my shin pads on when Toria started asking us all something. "I wonder what Coach has us doing today. I hope it's not running," Some of us laughed, if we were to run, then we wouldn't be here putting our gear on if we're running.
Victoria Hoffman, also known as Toria or the Disturber, is one of my good buddies. She's fourteen and a half years old and has the reddest hair I've probably ever seen. But sometimes we think her roots are blonde. Brown eyes and about 5'3. She's always happy and is talking to everyone she knows. Her best friend, other than us, would be food. And no, she's not fat, she's skinny. She's very chatty and could talk for ever if she wanted to. But she mainly loves talking about herself more than about others. She's also easy-going and a determined. She has this look that is usually plastered to her freckled face. It's a smile, that can make anyone smile even if they're mad. And she just wears that smile all day. She's also pretty manipulative and gets very distracted on the ice or even distracts others on the ice, it's pretty funny once you take the time to watch it.She's courageous and willing to take on any dare given to her. Victoria, also known as Toria or the Disturber on the ice, is number 23 on our hockey team.
Our other friend, Sabrina Levesque, was standing up as she stood there and watched. She doesn't play, she plays volleyball instead but cheers us on. We cheer her on as well when she plays. "Eh, running isn't that bad once you're use to it. I mean, we all are," Sabrina told her. She was more of a girly girl. She was like us, except she kept herself well groomed, I guess you could say. Always made sure her hair was good looking, her nails had to be on point and if a nail broke, it was like the end of the world sometimes. But she's still a great friend to have and cherish. She's the listener, she'll listen to anything and everything you have to say. She's generous and kinda, always a hard-worker and honest.
"I don't mind running, I could do it with my eyes closed," Danny piped in. Danny, also known as Danika and her nicknames which are the Bruiser and Lights Out, LeSage is our third and final friend. We have more friends, but they're guys who are pretty dumb and cowardly at times. Anyways, no one, other than Sabrina, Toria, and myself really know Danny. She's always one step ahead of everyone, very smart. She's kinda manipulative, much like Toria, except she litterally gets into your head. She may be a looker, but boy is she something! And I ain't kiddin' here, she is super nice and caring, especially towards her friends. But once you get to know her, you kinda know what she's capable of doing. To sum it up, she's the goon of our hockey team and out of the four of us girls. She's a tomboy, always wearing them jeans and that ball cap or flat cap! And her looks now, she wears glasses, has light brown hair that goes passed her shoulders and hazel eyes. She's one of the tallest on our team at 5'6 and is number 99.
I stood up rolling my eyes playfully as they all argued about running. It honestly didn't bother me at all, most of the boys whined a lot, except for our good buddy, Mason. "Come on, we're gonna be late for the actual practice that'll be going on, " I told them as I grabbed my stick and helmet and headed out the door. They followed as they talked, Mason trailed behind me with them.
Once we got out and into the rink, there stood our Coach along with some other mad. Who just didn't seem too appealing. He wasn't someone we knew or that I knew. But I just let it go and went on with my day. School was boring enough as it was, people you hate, classes you love or dislike, teachers and just plain school as well, it was useless. We skated our laps to warm up as we all waited for Coach to be finished with the other man. The boys mainly skated together in small groups dispersed around the edges of the rink.
Toria was in front of Danny and I as she skated backwards and looked every so often so she could see where she was going. She was the klutz of our team, so she could be skating down the ice, no one around her and then she'd completely fall. Either by tripping over herself, running into someone else because she wasn't paying attention, who knows? "Any of you guys know who Coach is talking to?" I asked, they looked over towards Coach and the odd man.
They both shrugged their shoulders, "I have no idea, you?" Toria said pointing to Danny to see if she had anything to say about it.
"Maybe he's a Coach for a different hockey team?" She guess, we both kinda nodded, not really knowing what te truth was. But guessing was all right and fun. We got cut short from our conversation when Coach called out three names, LeSage, Hoffman, and Morin. By the way, Lesage and Morin are both french names, but most English people pronounce them differently and or the English way. Which kinda ticks me off sometimes, but it's all good in the end.
The three of us looked at each, I immediately thought that we did something wrong. The boys all laughed and murmured stuff amongst themselves. Danny had 'accidentally' tripped one of the boys and then had pushed another, causing all four of the boys that were there to fall on the ground. Why? Because the boy she had pushed was dumb and held on to the other boys who all held on to one another.
We came to a quick and complete stop, shaving the ice as we stood together side by side not saying a word. Our Coach was strict and a leader, but he wasn't mean or anything. He just made sure that all his players on his team were the best, including girls. He made us work hard and in the end, always came a reward. Coach turned towards us with a smile on his face, "Girls, this is Adrian Johnson-" Toria immediately had cut him off before he could finish.
Danny and I started laughing, and we had covered our mouths so no one could see us. even though it was pretty impossible to miss two girls laughing." Who the hell is he?" I mentally wanted to smack her upside the head for how stupid she was. None of us know for Pete's sake! He didn't get around to telling us because of her.
"Adrian, meet Victoria. Victoria, meet Adrian." He nodded towards her and Toria did nothing but stand there. "Anyways, Adrian is scouting out young kids from around Canada to represent Team Canada at the Junior Goodwill Games this year."
Adrian Johnson takes off from where Coach had stopped. "Indeed that is true. We happened to fall upon the three of you. I've been watching you three for the past couple weeks at your games. And the three of you have a pretty powerful power line on that ice. You got the speed," he pointed towards me, "the power," He pointed to Danny, "and finally the distracter and pretty great scorer." He nods towards Toria.
We all nod, thanking him for telling us what we were capable of, even though we knew that we could do that anyways. "We want the three of you for Team Canada! How about it?" He asked us. I was super shocked when he had asked the three of us to play for Canada in the Games this year. Never would I have thought that three of us could make it this far, but it could also help launch our careers, that is if we're all still doing hockey and are interested in it.
I was just so ecstatic, I had no words to explain my happiness. My thoughts were out of this world and beyond gone by now. I was just surprised and I never saw that coming. But I am happy when I look at it. Look how far the three of have gotten. We've made it pretty far compared to the boys on our team. And what's even better is that the three of us get to go together to the Game. I can't wait!
Danny and I nodded away and Toria stood there and thought. She nodded after awhile and Adrian smiled, "I expect to see you three in Los Angeles on Wednesday," Wait! In two days!?
"We'll be there all right!" Toria hollered.
The three of us thanked Coach and then headed back with the others to continue our practice. I saw the happiness in both my friends' eyes. I hope they're as happy as I am.
