The Lost Jewel

Chapter 3- Matt

Fiona’s forehead glistened with sweat. She had called Matt so many times but he did not answer. He never switched off his phone. The most he would do was to switch his phone to silent mode. Anxious, she called Pete as he was Matt’s best friend.

“Pete, do you know where Matt is?” she asked.

Uneasily, he replied, “Um… we hung out just now but we had gone home.” As she heard it, she could hear the uneasiness and nervousness in his voice. She immediately knew something was amiss. She shouted loudly into the phone, “Meet me in headquarters and tell me the truth!”

She then started texting a message to Fiona. When they met, Pete told the girls what had happened, starting from Matt’s phone call till when they went home. Penny knew the answer, “Matt must have been kidnapped on his way home!”

Fiona picked up her phone and was about to call Sergeant See when her phone rang first. It was Sergeant See. She switched on the loudspeaker. “Sergeant See, we were about to call you but you called first. What news do you have?”

Sergeant See said in a grim voice, “A policeman on patrol just found Matt’s body in a dark alley. He is in the ICU now, and doctors are trying to revive him right now…”

Pete and the two girls were picked up by a police van for the sake of their safety after what had happened to Matt. When they arrived at the hospital, they could only wait outside the emergency ward. Matt’s mother, Mrs Tay, was already there with her face buried in her hands.

Pete told Sergeant See about what happened and Sergeant See seemed really mad. “All of you are going to be confined in the confinement rooms of the Homes for teenagers. This is for your safety. And thankfully, Toby has awakened.”

On the rooftop of the building opposite the hospital, a gruff voice reported into a walkie-talkie, “One down, 5 to go. The sergeant, and the four kids.”
