"I'm sorry Lexi, but I have to move. I really don't want to leave you but I don't have anyone to take care of me here," I say to my best friend Alexis. We are both standing in my room and she's watching me pack my suitcases.

"It's not fair though Maya. Now who am I supposed to sit with at lunch? Who am I supposed to chill with after school? Who's house am I supposed crash at when I get drunk and can't go home?" She says to me. I really don't want to leave her. My mom died in a car accident a week ago as she was driving home from work and no one knows where my dad is because he left us when I was four. Two days ago I got a call from a woman named Amanda Baker telling me that she's my legal guardian and she's coming to pick me up in two days. She told me she lives in California so we will have to take a plane from my house in Canada to hers. She sounded nice enough over the phone, but I've never been out of the country before. All I know is that she has a husband named Seth Baker and that she'll be here in ten minutes. She told me that she'll tell me more about her and her family once we board the plane.

"Look, I promise I'll Skype or call you everyday alright? Besides, you have such a bubble personality. I'm sure you'll replace me in no time," I say with a sad smile. I lean forward and give her a hug. "Now stop being such a lazy butthead and help me close this damn suitcase!" I say and she chuckles. She jumps on top of the suitcase while I close the zipper. Once it's closed we high five each other for our amazing team work. I don't have a lot of stuff, so I managed to fit all my important belongings in just two suitcases. Mom would be so proud at my packing skills.

That must be Mrs Baker. Alexis grabs my other suitcase and we walk as fast as we can downstairs. Before opening the front door I look around my house one more time. This place will always be my home. To be completely honest, I'm kinda glad I'm moving because I have way too many memories in this place. I wipe the tears that gathered by my eyes and open the front door. On our driveway there is a taxi and a beautiful woman walks out of it and towards me.  She has blue eyes, slightly greying blonde hair, a kind smile and crinkles by her eyes. She is wearing a black dress that reaches past her mid thigh with a grey blazer. I can tell she was a stunner when she was younger. She has this motherly look about her that calms my nerves slightly. She comes and gives me a hug and I hug her back.

"I'm Mrs Baker but you can just call me Amanda. Mrs Baker makes me feel too old," she says with a smile. "You must be Maya Edwards. So nice to meet you and I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I'll do my best to make you feel welcome and at home at my home. And you are?" She gestures to Alexis.

"I'm Alexis Wagner, Maya's best friend. Nice to meet you ma'am," Alexis shakes her hand however, Mrs Baker pulls her in for a hug and a chuckle at the shocked expression on Alexis' face.

"Well, let's get these suitcases in the taxi and be on our way," Mrs Baker says and grabs the suitcase Alexis was holding. She walks to the trunk of the taxi and I follow her and she closes the trunk once we have packed the suitcases in. Once we're packed and ready I give Alexis one last big hug.

"Bye Lexi. Don't miss me too much babe," I say with a wink.

"Bye Maya. Remember to call me and to tell me about all the hot boys you meet," she says and I pull away from the hug with a laugh. Oh Lexi, I'm really going to miss her. Mrs Baker and I climb into the taxi and I wave at Lexi through the window as the car drives off. A tear forms as I realize that this time I'm driving away from home and I won't be returning.
