"here is a new tether to try, fenrir!" Called Odin, holding the length of string up in the air for all to see. Fenrir almost laughed. "That is merely a string, Odin, and it's weaving is of no match to the vast links of the chains i have broken before. I could break that in merely an instant."
"I will believe it when i see it." Said tyr With a smile. But something in his eyes gave fenrir pause. "Fine." Fenrir said. "I will be bound with this puny thread, on one condition. A god is to put his hand in my mouth in a show of good faith. If, by some impropable twist of fate i am unable to break this miniscule thread, you must let me out. If you do not,  i will bite the hand off that brave God. These are my terms. They shall not waver."
Odin looked displeased. "I accept your terms." Then, to the gods he said "which one of you will consent to put your hand in fenrir's mouth?" The gods were silent. Then Tyr stepped forward. "I will." He said.
He went over to fenrir and fenrir put his jaws over tyr's hand, dwarfing it completely. Then Thor stepped forward with the string. Then Thor bound fenrir. And the course of history was set. As the gods had expected, fenrir could not break the string. He thrashed and strained, but to no avail. Finally, he had to admit defeat. "I cannot break it. Now let me out!" He thundered. "We will not." Chorused the gods. Fenrir growled "Then Tyr will pay." Fenrir bit off tyr's hand. Tyr whimpered in pain. "Liars, all of you. I would have sided with you! I would have fought your battles! But instead, the great gods of asgard bound me to a rock, all because I am strong? What will your worshipers think? What will your sons and daughters think? Ah, but I know, you will lie to them like you lied to me! The gods all walked away from him. "All should know what you have done!" With that last promise ringing in his ears, fenrir found a sharp rock and cut himself with it. From the cut flowed a river that was later named ván. (Norse for expectation) all who drank from the river would know what lies the gods had told to put away fenrir.
