CHAPTER FOUR

THERE WAS A BIG COMMOTION on the patio when James and I arrived at the estate. To no avail, of course. She was seemingly very upset over something. Is this about the phone call she got earlier?

I immediately went to her side to console her.

"What's wrong, Nana? Bakit po kayo umiiyak?" tanong ko sa kaniya. Hindi siya sumagot at patuloy lang sa pag-iyak.

Someone cleared their throat behind me, obviously trying to get my attention. That's when I finally noticed the presence of the two men standing on the other side of the patio. My father's best friend and right hand man, Tito Miguel, and our family lawyer, Mr. Asuncion. They were both wearing black business suits.

"Tito Miguel, Mr. Asuncion, I am sorry but you are too late. The funeral was this morning. Didn't you receive the emails I had sent?" I informed them.

"We are sorry to have come at a really bad time," panimula niya. "pero hindi kami pumunta dito para sa libing ng iyong mga magulang."

"W-what do you mean you're not here for their funeral? Why are you here then?" I asked, confused.

"Clara, I am very sorry but we've come to bear more bad news." Ani niya.

"More bad news? My parents are dead! There isn't anything much worse than that!"

"Again, I am sorry. But there is. This got something to do with your parents' death and everything they've left behind."

His statement got me even more confused. Ano ang ibig niyang sabihin? "W-what do you mean everything t-they've left behind?" tanong ko sa kaniya. Nagsimula ng manginig ang aking boses.

"Clara, your dad didn't write a last will and testament, probably because he didn't expect to die any time soon." He cleared his throat once again.

"Nobody was expecting that of course." He added.

"W-what? What does that mean?! Please! Tell it to me straight! Huwag na kayong magpaligoy-ligoy pa! I am very tired and so confused about everything since I've woken up from a coma! Wala na akong lakas na natitira para sa mga guessing games ninyo!" I screamed at them. I was starting to get hysterical.

James immediately went to my side and held me close. Once again, he gave me the support and comfort that I really needed at the moment.

Tito Miguel faced Mr. Asuncion who cleared his throat and finally decided to speak up. His body language was still seemingly uneasy and fidgety.

"Clara, ang ibig sabihin ni Mr. Magalyo ay mapupunta sa korporasyon ang lahat ng pag-aari ng iyong ama sa kadahilanang walang inawang last will and testament and iyong mga magulang." He finally said.

"I am really sorry, Clara." Dagdag niya.

"W-what?" I asked, breathless. I can't believe this is happening to me!

And Mr. Asuncion didn't end it there.

"And to be clear, it means that all of your family's possessions including the jewelries, cars, properties, houses, and estates all over the world are now owned by the Villanueva Corporation. Kasama na din doon ang lahat ng kompanya na napapailalim sa korporasyon." Pagtatapos niya.

"What?! You can't do this to me! Sa akin iniwan nina Mommy at Daddy ang lahat! You can't take away what my family left for me!" I screeched.

"Yes, we can actually. It is the law and it is on my side." Sagot naman ni Tito Miguel. "And since I am your father's right hand man, I am going to inherit his position as CEO and head of the board of the Corporation."

"Tito Miguel, you are my father's best friend! You know that the corporation has been founded and owned by Villanueva's ever since, and that it should only possessed by a Villanueva! You know that he'd want me to take over the company when he's passed away!" I pleaded.

They can't take away the only things that make me closer to my family! It's the one thing that I have left.

"I am sorry. Don't be ridiculous, Clara!" He scoffed. "Wala kang alam sa pagpapatakbo ng isang multi-billion international corporation! You haven't even graduated from college yet, and you're taking up Advertising Arts for goodness' sakes. That's got nothing to do with your family's business. I'm not going to let you burn it to the ground."

My mind was racing like a rocket shooting up to the sky. Maybe there's something I could do para mapanatiling sa akin ang korporasyon kung saan ibinuhos ng aking mga magulang ang kanilang mga pawis at dugo. The corporation is rightfully mine!

"I... I could always learn. I can shift programs from advertising arts to business –"

Tito Miguel didn't even let me finish what I wanted to say. He immediately interjected. "There's nothing you can do now, Clara, dear. Your father's company is now finally mine."

I gasped in shock.

"Why are you doing this? I just had my parents buried this morning! And what do you mean that it's finally yours?"

"It's simple really. I've worked my ass off since your father and I graduated in college and yet I still continued to live in the shadows of your father. The board has always favored him and set me aside as a back-up plan. And now, it's the back up plan's time to shine." He smirked. "I deserve all of this."

"How could you?! We treated you like family and you decided to steal everything that's our's! You're a monster!" I screeched at him. I wanted to slap him, scratch him and hurt him in all ways I possible can but I was held in place by James, who's been quite the whole time.

"Call me anything you want. But nothing's going to change. I still own your father's corporation and there's nothing you can do about it." He arranged the lapel of his suit. "Now this is what's going to happen; you're going to take that small luggage that your old nanny packed for you and you're going leave this property before I call the police and have you arrested for trespassing."

"WHAT?! YOU CAN'T MAKE ME LEAVE MY OWN HOUSE!" I've started to hyperventilate.

No! He can't take away my family's estate! It has been the home of the Villanueva's for decades! My great great great grandfather built this place from the ground up! He can't take it away!

"Actually, I can. And this is my estate now. You should be thankful that I'm even letting you leave with some of your stuff. Now leave!" sigaw niya!

I didn't know what happened next. There was a lot of shouting. A lot of us – me, Nana Maria, Mila – were being hysterical and crying. It was a total chaos.

I continued to hyperventilate as all of this happened. I couldn't breathe.

And the next thing I know, the darkness has consumed me.
